BEVERLEY HILLS, CALIFORNIA: The 80th Golden Globe Awards have begun and it is now showtime in Beverly Hills at The Beverly Hilton. The show started with a monologue by host and comedian Jerrod Carmichael after he walked onto the stage to the sound of Chloe Flower's piano. He then addressed the HFPA diversity issues.

"I'm here because I'm Black," he said in reference to last year's controversy. Carmichael went on to call the Hollywood Foreign Press Association a "White organization" and pointed out "they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died."

The end of the Golden Globes: How claims of racism and sexism destroyed the award show

A Los Angeles Times exposé in 2021 revealed how there was a lack of racial diversity in the HFPA. The Globes was boycotted by studios like Netflix, Amazon, and WarnerMedia, as well as stars like Scarlett Johansson and Tom Cruise after the investigation. In May 2021, NBC announced it would not air the ceremony the following year.

The investigation found the HFPA did not have any Black members among its 87 members. They had failed to induct one in nearly two decades. The organization faced sharp criticism for omitting Black-led films and TV shows like 'Judas and the Black Messiah' and 'I May Destroy You'.

Twitter erupted after Carmichael's monologue, with one user stating, "The feeling of discomfort and awkwardness in the room during jerrod carmichael's monologue could probably power a country."

Another said, "Jerrod Carmichael destroying the Hollywood Foreign Press while hosting their show gave me life." "I deeply deeply love that Jerrod Carmichael is treating the Golden Globes opening like he’s talking to a kindergarten class," said one user.

"I love Jerrod Carmichael for making this as uncomfortable as it absolutely should be," one user wrote, while another said, "I totally understand ppl not supporting the golden globes, but in my household we support jerrod carmichael."

"Seeing Jerrod Carmichael rip the Hollywood Foreign Press to shreds then immediately giving the night’s first award to Ke Huy Quan is an amazing start to the #GoldenGlobes," said one user.
