Bella Thorne takes on a surprising new role in the ‘Spring Breakers’ sequel
Bella Thorne is taking on a much bigger role in the upcoming 'Spring Breakers' sequel. The former Disney star will return to the franchise. However, this time, she will have a major role behind the camera. Thorne will star in the sequel and has now confirmed that she is writing and directing the film. The move marks a new step in her career as she takes control of the story and its direction. The cast includes 'Stranger Things' breakout Grace Van Dien, Ariel Martin from 'Zombies 2,' and True Whitaker from 'I Love L.A.' Matthew Bright was attached to direct the film at that stage. Thorne revealed the change during an appearance on Alex Cooper's 'Call Her Daddy' podcast. She said the producers watched an early cut of her upcoming film 'Color Your Hurt' and then asked her to write something for the sequel.
"The producers watched 'Color Your Hurt,' which is the movie that I just wrapped, an early cut of it. And they asked me to write something to see if they would like it," Thorne said. "And they loved it! And now I'm writing and directing 'Spring Breakers 2.'" 'Color Your Hurt' marks Thorne's directorial debut. The coming-of-age thriller follows a young gay man who seeks acceptance in a hostile community. The production on the film wrapped in October. Thorne also explained how her version of 'Spring Breakers' 2 will differ from the 2012 film. She said the original came during a period when young female stars faced intense comparisons in pop culture. Thorne mentioned Miley Cyrus, Zendaya and Selena Gomez while discussing that period. She said the three Disney stars were compared over who would become the next "bad girl."
Selena Gomez starred in the original 'Spring Breakers' alongside Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and James Franco. Harmony Korine wrote and directed the 2012 film. Thorne says the new sequel will have a different energy. She teased a movie filled with chaos, wild moments and plenty of fun. "This time, things are different," she said. "They are crazy. There's a lot of craziness, there's a lot of litness. There is so much litness in this movie." The sequel will still have ties to the original film. Muse Productions' Chris Hanley and Jordan Gertner are returning as producers. Hanley previously worked on films such as 'American Psycho' and 'The Virgin Suicides'.
Korine is not involved with the sequel. The filmmaker has previously said he has "no interest" in returning to the franchise. Thorne has kept the plot details under wraps, but she has been open about the film's tone. She described the project in very enthusiastic terms during her podcast appearance. "I don't want to get in trouble, but what I can say is it is so litty, litty McTitties," Thorne said. "From start to finish, it's lit as fuck." The sequel does not have a confirmed release date yet. Thorne's expanded role gives 'Spring Breakers' 2 a new creative direction, with the actress now shaping the story and directing the film herself.
