Is 'Scream 8' happening? Director Kevin Williamson's latest update will excite horror franchise's faithful

'Scream' fans have reason to be excited. Amid the seventh instalment's packed run, the latest update from director  Kevin Williamson will have the horror franchise's faithful mighty pleased. The latest comes on the back of reports that Paramount Pictures was developing 'Scream 8'.

New scoop in the block suggests that the idea might come from Neve Campbell, who plays Sidney Prescott in the film. Earlier, Williamson spoke to Deadline about the plans for the upcoming film. "When you’re sitting on the set at 3 in the morning, you’re like, 'Well, what would Scream 8 be about?' And you start spit-balling, and Neve had this great idea, and everyone seemed to run with it. So yeah, if this movie works and people want it, we’re here for the fans. So, if they want it, we’ll certainly give it to them."

At the time of writing, there is no official word on what to expect as far as the plotline goes. However, there is every reason to believe that the veteran actress can have some creative say for an eighth film. She has been the film's lead since the first film in 1996. However, the plan was to see a new lead featuring Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega as Sam and Tara Carpenter. Campbell returned to the franchise but backed out over a pay dispute.

Critics' reviews for the latest film have been mixed, with the consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reading, "Less a return to Scream's roots than a disappointing creative regression, this seventh entry draws little blood with its dull knife of a script."

Alongside Campbell are Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Courteney Cox reprising their roles from the previous films. Isabel May, Anna Camp, Michelle Randolph, Jimmy Tatro, Mckenna Grace, Asa Germann, Celeste O'Connor, Sam Rechner, Mark Consuelos, Tim Simons, and Joel McHale form a rich ensemble cast. The film follows a masked entity targeting Prescott's daughter Tatum (May).

For those yet to catch the film, the logline reads, "When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target. Determined to protect her family, she must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all."

'Scream 7' is running in cinemas. It is expected to stream on Paramount+  upon finishing its initial theatrical run.
