Does 'Scream 7' have a post-credit scene? Here’s what happens and what it means for franchise future
For decades, the ‘Scream’ franchise has played by its own rules, gleefully mocking trends while also cashing in on some of them. And one thing it has mostly avoided is the post-credit stinger that keeps audiences glued to their seats while the theater lights slowly come back on. But ‘Scream 7’ decides to explore the idea, not with a big sequel tease, but with a small mid-credit moment. Let’s rewind a bit. The seventh installment arrives after what can only be described as a behind-the-scenes shake-up.
By the time the film hit theaters, curiosity and expectations were high. Critics, however, haven’t exactly been showering it with love. In fact, this chapter has dipped lower on review charts than any of its predecessors. It currently holds a 39% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, the big question for loyal fans isn’t just about scores, it’s this: Is there anything after the credits worth waiting for? Short answer: Sort of. There is one mid-credit scene tucked after the traditional cast roll call. Once that portion ends, a brief extra moment appears. And after that? Nothing.
The scene in question centers on Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), who finally gets her moment in front of a live television camera, reporting on the latest Ghostface bloodbath. Chad (Mason Gooding) stands loyally behind the lens, acting as her cameraman. It’s a light, almost cheeky wrap-up to a small thread earlier in the movie when Gale (Courteney Cox) gave them the green light to go on air. So yes, it ties a bow on that detail. But it doesn’t exactly set the stage for the next massacre.
The scene feels more like an extended goodbye than a breadcrumb trail. The franchise has never leaned into the Marvel-style strategy of dangling future plotlines in the credits. In fact, ‘Scream VI’ cheekily poked at the very idea, with Mindy joking that “not every movie needs to have a post-credits scene.” Now, before anyone starts whispering that this means the franchise is packing it in, let’s slow down. Kevin Williamson, who returned to direct this chapter after penning the original 1996 classic, has already mused about what an eighth film could look like.
During a conversation with Deadline, he shared, “When you’re sitting on the set at 3:00 in the morning, you’re like, ‘Well, what would Scream 8 be about?’ And you just start spit-balling. And Neve had this great idea, and everyone seemed to run with it. So yeah, if this movie works and people want it, we’re here for the fans. So, if they want it, we’ll certainly give it to them.” Of course, none of this guarantees a green light. That decision rests with Paramount Pictures.
