What is Netflix's 'Obsession' based on?
The upcoming thriller is based on the 1991 novel 'Damage' written by Josephine Hart. The novel was a bestseller at that time and its popularity only grew after its release. In 2008, the book was turned into an opera.
'Damage' tells the forbidden love story of an unnamed doctor, who is currently a successful politician, serving as a Member of Parliament. He is a frontrunner to be a minister. He has one son, named Martyn. However, things turned upside down, when Martyn introduces the protagonist to his girlfriend Anna. The protagonist falls for Anna and starts to have an extra-marital affair with her. On the other hand, Martyn has no idea about the ongoing affair. Thinking that his relationship is going strong, he gets engaged to her. The book details the affair and the shocking end.
This is not the first time 'Damage' has been adapted. In 1992, it was adapted into a movie starring Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche.
Show writer, Morgan Lloyd-Malcolm, confirmed that the upcoming adaptation would be different from the novel, which depicts Anna as a character who does everything the male character does. This characterization is expected to be changed in the series. 'Obsession' will focus on Anna's mind to understand her behaviour and why she does what she does. The series also introduces Jay and Ingrid as William's son and wife.
What is the plot of Netflix's 'Obsession'?
The upcoming Netflix adaptation of the series more or less follows the same plot as the source material. The official synopsis on Netflix reads, "A respected London surgeon's affair with his son's fiancée turns into an erotic infatuation that threatens to change their lives forever."
'Obsession' will release exclusively on Netflix on April 13.
