Trigger warning: rape

BEIJING, CHINA: Fans are wondering if Kris Wu is free after the latest updates on his social media accounts. While he is a C-pop idol, K-pop fans have also been tuning into his case as he was a member of EXO before he left the boy group in 2014. The Chinese-Canadian artist was embroiled in a scandal in mid-2021 after Du Meizhu, an alleged girlfriend claimed that he had raped her and 30 other girls out of which some were minors. Kris Wu had denied all rumors but was still arrested due to public opinion.

Kris Wu was arrested in August 2021 by the Beijing police under suspicion of rape. Leaked photos claimed that he had been booked and sent to prison. In June 2022, we finally got another update on Kris Wu as official media outlets like Variety claimed that reports stated that a trial was underway. It would not be publicized as Du Meizhu was a minor. Well, a new update has come in a year after his arrest. Popular Korean media outlet Naver claimed that the ex-EXO star had been freed from prison and had updated his social media.

Where is Kris Wu?

The report also claimed that Kris had been found guilty by the court of luring and sexually assaulting a minor trainee. The social media updates in August include photos of a race car that falls in line with Kris’ love for cars and his extensive collection. Another photo is of a man skiing. However, fans are squashing the rumors as they claim that the social media updates were by a hacker.

Fans on Weibo dug into the update and claim that a hacker named Simon Lee has been uploading his own pictures on Kris’ social media accounts like Facebook. More are inclined to believe this since there have been no official announcements or verdicts on Kris Wu’s trial other than the June update. This also follows the incident where two alleged friends of Du Meizhu claim that she lied and that Kris Wu did not rape or sleep with any minors as far as she knew.

The friends played an audio clip that they claim is Du Meizhu who says that she simply wanted to scare Kris and extort money. With this turn of events, more and more fans have taken to following the 'innocent until proven guilty' motto. They are also pointing out that Kris Wu was arrested due to public opinion rather than evidence. With China being known for its 99.9% conviction rate, if the former K-pop idol is found guilty, he can be imprisoned for 3 to 10 years.
