‘Unchosen’ Ending Explained: Breaking down Netflix show’s finale twist and rise of new cult leader

A desperate escape and a haunting chase lead to a final twist, as ‘Unchosen’ ends with one character in control while others struggle to break free.

Netflix’s latest dark drama has been building chatter, and by the time the final episode hits, it leaves viewers with plenty to process. ‘Unchosen’ closes on a note that feels unsettling and, in some ways, unfinished. The idea for the show traces back to creator Julie Gearey, who once had a brief interaction with a young woman from a strict religious background. That short moment eventually shaped Rosie’s (Molly Windsor) character. In the series, Rosie lives inside a closed-off religious cult, cut off from the outside world. Her life begins to change when she meets Sam (Fra Fee). He’s a mysterious outsider who enters her life by saving her daughter, Grace, from drowning. From there, things start to spiral in ways that are hard to ignore. Rosie finds herself pulled toward Sam, even though there are clear warning signs.

At the same time, her marriage to Adam (Asa Butterfield) is falling apart behind closed doors. Adam is not just controlling; he is also dealing with his own hidden struggles. He’s confused about his identity, which he cannot openly discuss within the group’s rigid belief system. By the time the story reaches its final stretch, every relationship is fraying. Sam, who initially appears as a kind of savior, reveals his darker side more openly. It turns out he is a convicted k*ller who understands exactly how to gain trust and then twist it to his advantage. He slowly works his way into the community’s inner circle, all while pulling strings behind the scenes. Rosie and Adam, despite their differences, both become caught in his web. In the finale, Rosie decides she has had enough.

After enduring years of mistreatment, she makes a bold choice to leave the community with her daughter, Grace. Before she leaves, she drops a truth bomb on Adam, admitting she has been involved with Sam. That confession makes Adam angry, which makes him a hypocrite, since he himself had crossed a line with Sam earlier. What changes everything is the threat against Grace. When Adam learns that Sam has put their daughter in danger, his priorities change. For once, he stops thinking about appearances and focuses on protecting his family. He agrees to help Rosie escape. As rain pours down, they try to drive away, but Sam realizes what is happening and goes after them. Adam steps in, telling Rosie to run with Grace while he confronts Sam. The fight gives them a head start, but it does not end there. Sam breaks free and chases Rosie into the woods, where things take a terrifying turn.

In one of the most intense moments of the series, Sam catches up to Rosie and forces her into the water, trying to drown her. The scene mirrors the crime that landed him in prison years earlier, when he k*lled his girlfriend in a similar way. For a brief second, it looks like history might repeat itself. Then, unexpectedly, Sam loosens his grip. Rosie manages to escape, grabbing Grace and running for their lives. The final scenes jump forward in time, showing what has happened since that night. Rosie and Grace are gone, free from the community that once trapped them. Adam’s future remains uncertain, especially after Sam uses a recorded clip of their intimate moment to pressure him into staying silent and falling in line. Sam, however, is the one who ends up in a position of power. Over the course of a year, he manages to climb to the top of the cult’s hierarchy.
