Taylor Sheridan's 'Mayor of Kingstown' drops major update after renewed for season 5
Following a gritty season 4 finale, 'Mayor of Kingstown' has now been renewed for a fifth and final season. The Taylor Sheridan-created crime drama starring Jeremy Renner also had a major update, with the season trimmed down to eight episodes after having 10 for seasons 1 to 4. Also returning will be Edie Falco, alongside Renner.
Per THR, this will be the first ongoing series from Sheridan that has been set an end date after the changes ringing in at Paramount. The streamer has already ordered new seasons of the hit showrunner's 'Landman', 'Tulsa King', and 'Lioness'. The renewal for 'Mayor of Kingstown' does not come as a surprise, considering its popularity and standing with the audience and critics.
In Season 4 of Mayor of Kingstown, Mike McLusky's (Renner) control over Kingstown is threatened as new key names compete to fill the power void left in the wake of the Russians. This forces him to confront the resulting gang war and stop them from taking over the town. Meanwhile, with those he loves in more danger than ever before, he must also deal with a sharp and blunt new Warden (Falco) to protect his own. At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation on when the show releases, and the plotline.
Earlier, co-creator Hugh Dillon had revealed that the series had plans to end with a seventh season. "Our goal is to get to that Season 7," he told ScreenRant. "Because that’s as far as we can get, because that’s where he’s always had it. 15 years ago, he had it. 15 years ago, ‘So, here’s how it’s starting, Mitch is going to get killed off in the first 10 pages, and season 7, episode 10, this is where Mike’s going to be."
Renner had previously weighed in on the brutality of season 4. "There's a lot of square peg, round hole for Mike this season," he told Collider. "Especially in a time he’s most vulnerable and desperate to protect his brother. It took the entire season to finally get him back in his arms and to protect him. It’s a little cathartic ending for them both, I think. I love the idea of what now? What happens now for them both? Especially for my brother, like what now? I'm recalling as we're talking about it."
Also starring are Laura Benanti, Dillon, Taylor Handley, Tobi Bamtefa, Derek Webster, Hamish Allan-Headley, Lennie James, and Nishi Munshi. Sheridan executive produces alongside Dillon, Renner, Antoine Fuqua, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Bob Yari, Michael Friedman, Dave Erickson, Christoph Schrewe, Wendy Riss, Evan Perazzo, and Keith Cox.
