Emily in Paris': Why Emily's boss is the most insufferable character in Netflix show
Contains spoliers and speculations for 'Emily in Paris' readers discretion advised
PARIS, FRANCE: In the heart of the vibrant pink metropolis of Paris, Emily Cooper (Lily Collins), an American woman, is working hard to strike a balance between her career and her life while assimilating into French society in 'Emily in Paris'
However, things are not as rosy as Emily had hoped, as she is experiencing a number of setbacks in her relationship with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Alfie (Lucien Laviscount), and her career has also suffered as a result of her employer.
No, we're not talking about Sylvie Grateau (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), but rather someone else who was the main reason Emily unexpectedly landed in Paris.
Who is the most unbearable boss in 'Emily in Paris?'
Without a doubt, Madeline Wheeler (Kate Walsh) emerges as the most unpredictable employer. Madeline is the Director of Marketing at Gilbert Group, an American firm.
Initially, it was Madeline who was to work in Paris for a year to manage the company's latest purchase, Savoir, a French marketing business that requires assistance appealing to American customers.
However, Madeline's unexpected pregnancy prohibits her from accepting the post, so she proposes Emily, as a substitute. Madeline offers Emily a promotion and a pay raise when she returns to the United States as well.
Initially, despite Emily's challenges to assimilate into French society, Madeline continues to provide counsel and support from afar.
How Madeline Wheeler is the most agonizing character in 'Emily in Paris'
Madeline has to be one of the most agonizing characters in the show for a variety of reasons.
Her character is the embodiment of an out-of-touch, domineering American boss who is more concerned with business success than knowing or appreciating the culture she has been pushed into.
Madeline is portrayed as a serious, business-orientated executive aiming to bring Savoir into line with the Gilbert Group's American values.
In the second season, Madeline surprises Emily with a trip to Paris, which creates friction at Savoir, particularly with Sylvie, who opposes the reforms Madeline wishes to make. When Madeline dismisses Sylvie, this disagreement worsens, forcing Sylvie to leave and take the entire office staff with her, including Emily.
Another thing I dislike about Madeline is her habit of chatting with her mouth full all the time while attempting to conduct business, sipping her empty beverages, and crinkling wrappers.
While the first season established her as a helpful employer, the second season shattered her persona and portrayed her as a moany and annoying figure.
