'Doom Patrol' Season 3 Episode 7: Eternal Flagellation begins, fans 'thank writer'

The whole season focused on the different personal issues faced by Larry (Matt Bomer), Vic (Joivan Wade), Jane (Diane Guerrero), Cliff (Brendan Fraser) and Rita (April Bowlby). The plotline gave birth to a historic event called the Eternal Flagellation which was orchestrated by the Sisterhood of Dada to clean the world of what they considered evil. In tow was the amnesiac Laura DeMille who had an important mission which she absolutely couldn't remember. Over the course of the show, we see the gang deal with new challenges, the biggest being the Eternal Flagellation. Adding to the mess was the return of Laura's memories, which revealed her to be a villain working for the Brotherhood of Evil after betraying her once friends - the Sisterhood of Dada. As the Eternal Flagellatioon was carried out everything seemed to go wrong for everyone.

What happened at the end of 'Doom Patrol' Season 3?

The Eternal Flagellation gets carried out with the Doom Patrol accepting hard truths about themselves and moving on towards a better future. The season finale saw the gang on their way to rescue Cliff from the Brain, but with most of them having lost their power Rita is left to go on alone. We also saw the return of Shelley Byron aka The Fog (Wynn Everett), who helps guide the team back to the Manor. Larry ends up letting the Parasite, who we find out is named Keeg, merge with him. Laura, who was trapped and abandoned by Mallah (Jonathan Lipow) along with Cliff's brain, manages to escape and use his brain to power a giant robot. She locates the Brain and stamps on him. It is revealed that the Brain survives with half his body gone but Rita finds and kills him, pouring boiling water on him.

Laura after ditching Cliff, who believes she has some good left in her, is seen repentant of her actions and wants to make amends. In the Underground, things were going wrong with Kay trapped. This leads Jane to promise Dr Harrison (Catherine Carlen) her position as primary in exchange for helping Jane. The episode saw Larry achieve powers and Cliff function in his new giant robot body. Laura who discovered the time machine hidden by Rita uses it to travel to the Doom Manor with a note detailing her regrets, who's who and what she has done to Rita, and the Sisterhood to help with her memory loss. After they manage to stop Cliff who temporarily loses control the gang end up back at the Manor watching a news report of their deed. Rita is sick of people giving them labels like weirdos and misfits and suggests they label themselves and use their powers for good. The team all agree to be heroes as Cliff comically names them the Doom Force which everyone hates. Rita lets Laura join as well but will keep an eye on her.

A still from 'Doom Patrol' Season 3 finale (HBO MAX)

Towards the end we see Jane lose consciousness and return to the Underground where the power-loving control freak Dr Harrison wants to cash in on their deal. The gang meanwhile uses the time machine to go on their first mission as superheroes to stop a monster in a happy ending.

The season finale confirmed that the Doom Patrol will return with Madam Rouge once more. But we're left with the burning question about Jane and whether she'll be back as her status as primary remains ill-fated due to her bargain

'Doom Patrol' Season 3 is available for streaming on HBO MAX.
