SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: TWICE has become the next K-pop group to break the 7-year curse but it seems that they did it unknowingly. With the standard contracts being of seven years in K-pop, most groups have to take a decision in their 7th year whether to continue with the label or not. Due to restrictions or personal reasons, many members end up leaving or going on hiatus. There have been very few K-pop groups that have broken this curse like BTS, Seventeen, Mamamoo and GOT7. And while fans were not too sure about TWICE, we got a happy ending.

With TWICE debuting in 2015, we got an update in June 2022 that their label JYPE was discussing a contract renewal. In July, we got good news as all nine TWICE members renewed their contracts with their label JYPE. However, for the past few years, fans have been claiming mistreatment as JYPE has not been able to promote the girls well from not restocking albums to messing up solo projects. And so, while fans were worried if all the members would renew with the label, TWICE was not.

TWICE renew contract blindly

It seems that this decision took place solely based on the members’ trust in each other. Leader Jihyo confessed to Grammy Magazine that TWICE had actually not spoken to each other about the contract renewal right till the day it was officially announced to the public. She said, "We didn't realize that all members have renewed their contracts until right before the official announcement."

This is why TWICE was excited when the news came out as Jihyo added, "We wanted to share this incredible news with our fans as soon as possible because our fans are the main reason why we all decided to renew our contracts with JYP. We are excited to explore what new styles of music and concepts we can bring to the table and are looking forward to the increase in our members' musical contributions to the albums. Being a member of TWICE means having life-long friends and family. The sense of belonging will forever remain with us.”

‘The amount of trust’

Many fans were shocked that TWICE actually did not discuss with each other before renewing their contract. One fan joked, “Twice are just wonderful human beings who feels nauseous being separated for more than 15 min.” Another added, “Contract renewal being twice's version of the trust fall.” A ONCE posted, “What i would pay to be in the twice gc when the contract renewal was announced.”

Another fan tweeted, “Like?? not talking abt renewing your  contract.. the amount of trust you must have in each other TWICE WE LOVE YEW.” One made a reaction meme, “Twice when the contract renewal was announced.” Another added, “Im f**king crying, twice are actually connected on a deeper level cause how come they went blind to contract renewals and somehow it turned out all 9 of them renewed.”
