SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: It seems that when you are part of the biggest K-pop girl groups, everything you do is under scrutiny and that also applies to Blackpink and TWICE. After almost a 2-year hiatus, Blackpink is making a comeback as they released the pre-release single ‘Pink Venom’. Fans loved the song and immediately ended up charting it at #1 on MelOn, Bugs, FLO, Genie and on 69 iTunes charts. However, those who looked at the ‘Pink Venom’ lyrics feel that it was a diss at TWICE.

Produced by longtime collaborators Teddy and R.Tee, ‘Pink Venom’ is a hip-hop dance song with several moments that let all of the Blackpink members shine. We had Jisoo playing the ‘geomungo’ while Rosé flexed with her electric guitar. Lisa and Jennie’s back-to-back rap verses were the highlight of the second half. We even had ‘Pink Venom’ sampling the melody of Rihanna’s ‘Pon De Replay’ for Lisa’s first verse where she referenced 50 Cent’s ‘P.I.M.P.'. Rosé also took inspiration from Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ in the pre-chorus. But fans also think that they referenced TWICE.

Did Blackpink diss TWICE in ‘Pink Venom’?

Eagle-eyed fans made threads and explanations as they felt that Blackpink was dissing TWICE in ‘Pink Venom’. In the beginning, Jennie sings, ‘Just get your popcorn, don't even think about getting involved’. Fans think they are mocking TWICE who had tried to promote themselves at the CGV theatre franchise with TWICE combo sets when they first debuted in 2015. However, other Blinks think that Jennie is just referencing the scene in Blackpink's ‘Ddu-Du Ddu-Du’ music video where she is eating popcorn.

Jennie then raps, ‘I talk that talk, runways I walk, walk/Close your eyes, pop, pretend you're not looking,’ which fans think is a dig at TWICE’s upcoming single ‘Talk That Talk’ and Nayeon’s solo debut song ‘POP!’. If that wasn’t all, it was followed by Lisa rapping, ‘One by one, then two by two/Everything is collapsing at the flick of my fingertip/It was fancy for a fake show’. Fans think it is too much of a coincidence as TWICE’s upcoming album is titled ‘Between 1&2’ while they have a hit single titled ‘Fancy’. However, others pointed out that the ‘One by one’ lyrics is actually from the Rihanna sample.

While some fans may be reading too much into the lyrics, Knetz felt they understood why since YG is known to make diss tracks for their artists. The Blackpink single was written by Teddy and Danny Chung. ‘Pink Venom’ in general is also a diss track to Blackpink’s haters with lyrics like ‘Provoke us if you want/You can't handle it, and you know this,’ which could be reinterpreted by toxic fans looking to start a fanwar between popular K-pop groups.

‘There is no shade’

Some fans made comments like, “Blackpink really have no reason to diss twice though? It’s petty.” Another fan wrote, “Even if there was any substance in this it would be Teddy’s fault not the girls.” One Knetz joked, “Blackpink is bringing back so much needed tension in K-pop.” Another reasoned, “I guess I wasn’t the only one thinking the lyrics sounded a bit diss-y.. Especially with the ‘pop pop’ and the other coincidences. I think it’s really cool that a female group is willing to diss like this.” One Knetz wondered, “It probably is Teddy trying to diss all the girl groups who were put out to ride on Blackpink’s name I think this is fun.”

A multifan had hoped, “NVM I thought onceblinks are getting crumbs with those lyrics but yall are making up a diff story now saying they are "targetting".” Another wrote, “People try too hard to find a meaning behind these lyrics, I assure you it was just teddy trying to appear tough, there is no shade towards anyone lol.” One commented, “I want Twice to release a single dissing that middle aged men named teddy. And all lyrics should be written by members. And when it happens every single one of you should shut their mouths. Twice really should show that teddy why you shouldn't pit women against women.” With TWICE and Blackpink members being friends, another joked, “They wrote the lyrics together that day.”
