JYPE teases TWICE's contract renewal, fans weirded out: 'Is this to pressure any hold outs?'
With the usual K-pop contracts being for 7 years, it is time for TWICE to go through their contract renewal process having debuted in 2015 with their label JYPE. On June 26, JYPE held a press conference to talk about Nayeon’s solo debut with her first mini-album ‘Im Nayeon’. The label and Nayeon both revealed that the remaining TWICE members would also go on to show their different styles through individual activities. Fans had not thought twice about the contract renewal, as this itself was assurance enough that the girl group was not going anywhere as they already had plans for the near future.
However, at the same conference, the ending statement has everyone confused. Founder Park Jinyoung first cheered Nayeon’s achievements followed by the positive impact it would have on TWICE. We then had a representative of JYPE adding that TWICE was on the verge of renewing its contract. The official said, “We plan to officially announce the ongoing details regarding the renewal of the contract.” This has fans weirded out and reading in between the lines.

JYPE mentions TWICE’s contract renewal
K-pop Twitter has often noticed that when a member does not renew their contract, press releases reveal the ongoing process which has fans wondering if it is to pressurise the member to stay as seen in the case of Mamamoo’s Wheein who joined a new label. On the other hand, fans also observed that when a contract renewal is not going positively, the label stays silent on the matter as evident when GOT7 left JYPE. And so TWICE fans are divided as some think the news means a successful renewal while others think it is to pressurise some members who are considering leaving. However, all fans are sure that TWICE will be able to continue as several groups still promote together despite leaving their labels.
‘Theyll retire as TWICE’
The release of the contract renewal news has fans making tweets like, “Me walking into jype meeting room number 12 on a random wednesday in business formal attire to be twice's spokesperson and officially state demands for them and their contract.” Another fan pointed out, “Twice is definitely remewing coz Jype just made an "announcement" for a future "announcement" lol they are trying to hype this shit up. Mind you, they dont really do this. If the contract renewal aint going very well, theyll keep it silent until 1 month before the contract ends.” One fan was not worried, “The way nayeon literally just said theyll retire as twice when theyve met every single once and tzuyu is already ready for TTT New Year 2023. Nah, they aint going anywhere 😂 JYPE just likes to be dramatic.”

Another commented, “People: *worried* Me, knowing Twice will still remain as 9 and still release music even if someone leaves the company cause non-exclusive deals exist and they love each other:.” One fan added, “7 years is not a short time. TWICE have achieved so much during this period of time, and yet the sky’s still the limit for them. No matter what happens I’ll support them and enjoy each day I have with them. Never taking for granted the bond TWICE and ONCE share.” Another wondered, “If Twice didn't renew already, JYP wouldn't be making any announcements like this. They did this one to calm stockholders down because if the renewal didn't push through, they'd be focused more on laying low while trying to set up another flagship group.”

One was suspicious, “We doing teasers for contract renewals now? Or is this to pressure any hold outs? Or is JYPE trying to get ahead of something like a leak of some members being in contact with other agencies? This doesn’t bode well for OT9 renewal but we will see.” Another suggested, “I actually don't think this comment bodes anything in particular. Nayeon's solo debut isn't the time to announce group renewal info. The fact that nothing was announced at the start of the year was a little iffy, if we reach the (likely) August comeback with no announcement someone's probably leaving JYP at least. That's about it.”
