Will Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson return to Panem? 'Hunger Games' prequel drops major update
The world of Panem is about to welcome back two of its most iconic victors. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are officially stepping back into the 'Hunger Games' universe, marking their first on-screen reunion in the franchise in more than a decade. The pair, who headlined Lionsgate's massively successful films as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, will appear in the upcoming prequel 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping', set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence and Hutcherson are returning in what is expected to be a flash-forward sequence.
The studio is keeping the exact context of their appearance locked away, choosing not to reveal how their storyline connects to the events of the new film. Still, the announcement alone has electrified longtime fans of the dystopian series. Francis Lawrence, who previously directed four installments in the franchise, returns to helm the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' most recent novel. 'Sunrise on the Reaping' made waves upon publication for its darker tone and expanded political context, and Lionsgate appears poised to bring that scale to the screen.
The film features an ensemble cast led by Ralph Fiennes as President Snow, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, and Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket. Joining them are Joseph Zada, Glenn Close, Mckenna Grace, Maya Hawke, and Whitney Peak. The story unfolds on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, the infamous Second Quarter Quell, as per Deadline. It's set twenty-four years before Katniss Everdeen would volunteer as a tribute. This edition of the 'Games' is remembered for its cruel twist: twice the number of competitors, with forty-eight tributes forced into the arena.
At the center of the story is 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada. Resourceful, sharp-witted, and unprepared for the horrors awaiting him, Haymitch's traumatizing victory will eventually shape him into the mentor who guides Katniss and Peeta decades later. The original 'Hunger Games' films, released between 2012 and 2015, grossed more than $3.3 billion worldwide. Lawrence and Hutcherson last appeared together in 'Mockingjay — Part 2', which concluded with their characters finding hard-won peace after years of rebellion and loss. Both actors remain busy outside the arena.
Lawrence recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in 'Die My Love', while Hutcherson is coming off the success of 'Five Nights at Freddy's 2'. Their participation in the prequel adds star power to a film already positioned as one of Lionsgate's biggest titles of 2026. Also, the screenplay for 'Sunrise on the Reaping' comes from Billy Ray, adapting Collins' novel with her direct input. Producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson return under the Color Force banner, continuing their long-running relationship with the series, with Cameron MacConomy serving as executive producer.
