While 'Blonde' received bouquets for the rivetting trailer, Ana de Armas had brickbats thrown at her as fans took to Twitter to criticize the Marilyn Monroe movie for being based on fiction as well Armas's Cuban accent. 'The Gray Man' star, who according to multiple reports, learned English only in 2015, and even spent an entire year perfecting the legendary actress's accent with dialect coach Jessica Drake

Per Netflix, the official synopsis reads, "A look at the rise to fame and the epic demise of actress Marilyn Monroe, one of the biggest stars in the world." The movie also stars Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller, Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio, and Caspar Phillipson as John F. Kennedy among other major names.

Twitter reacts to Ana de Armas' accent in 'Blonde'

"At risk of offending those that are more concerned with language than substance, Norma Jean did not have a Spanish accent. Ana De Armas does in the trailer. There's plenty of cultural appropriation in Hollywood yes, but no reason to ruin historical accuracy by going the other way," one of the tweets read. "Yet another example of an actor not making her character believable because of her accent. I’m not willing to pretend Marilyn Monroe was Hispanic just so Ana de Armas can work. And btw, I love Ana but this was a giant casting failure," another wrote.

"i know the movie hasn’t come out yet but Blonde starring Ana de Armas looks stunning and the scenes gives me chills but i know y’all still hear her accent.. like it’s STRONG. i am very surprised they thought she sounded like marilyn because she literally doesn’t. looks ? yes," a fan tweeted. "I'm so torn on this. I love Ana de Armas, but her accent really pulls me out of the trailer, which isn't entirely her fault. Just doesn't quite hit with me. I'll definitely be watching it, maybe it's better in full context," a fan remarked.

"too bad ana de armas was so outspoken about working 9 months on the marilyn accent bc otherwise she could just pretend it's an artistic choice and I know filmtt and half of critics would buy it," one of the comments read. "everyone seems fixated on ana de armas’ accent in BLONDE but i think that only makes the film more interesting; it emphasizes the inherent artifice in biopics (and in acting overall), which imo is appropriate in a work seemingly dedicated to exploring artifice versus reality," a fan explained.

"I like Ana de Armas but I gotta admit I'm skeptical about her playing Marilyn Monroe... Her accent is still pretty obvious in everything I've seen her in. It's not like Nicole Kidman or Saoirse Ronan who can completely disguise their native accent," a fan shared his two cents.
