It’s almost time to say goodbye (again)! The magic that started years ago with ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ is preparing for one last curtain call, as its follow-up, ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’, is officially wrapping up with Season 3. The news came straight from social media, and while fans had been hoping for more, the message was clear: this next chapter will also be the final one. The upcoming season is expected to arrive this summer on both Disney+ and Disney Channel. It is not a long run either, consisting of only four episodes to close things out.

Moreover, Selena Gomez is stepping back into the role of Alex Russo, the character that made her a household name, and she will appear in more than one episode. That alone would have been enough to get longtime fans excited, but there is more. Gomez is also taking on a new role behind the camera, directing the premiere episode. It marks her first time calling the shots as a director, and honestly, it feels like a full-circle moment. Meanwhile, David Henrie continues to lead the series as Justin Russo, now older and living a very different kind of life from the original show. The revival has built its own identity around the next generation, with characters like Billie, played by Janice LeAnn Brown, taking center stage.

Alongside her are Alkaio Thiele as Roman Russo, Max Matenko as Milo Russo, Taylor Cora as Winter, and Mimi Gianopulos as Giada Russo. Meanwhile, Season 3 begins in a state of tension. According to the official description, “Billie, still reeling from losing Alex at the end of Season 2, discovers that the only way to rescue her mother is to reunite with her long-lost father. As her family bands together to find Alex, Billie realizes that their combined power is the only way the Russos can defeat the evil plaguing them.” Behind the scenes, the creative team remains familiar. Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas continue to steer the writing. Meanwhile, executive producers include Gary Marsh, Jonas Agin, Rick Williams, and Gomez and Henrie themselves.

The foundation for all of this, of course, goes back to Todd Greenwald, who originally created the series that started it all. Looking back, the journey has been quite something. The original show ran from 2007 to 2012 and followed three siblings juggling school life while learning magic, all under the watchful eye of their family. It had humor, a bit of mischief, and that classic Disney charm that stuck with a whole generation. Fast forward to now, and the revival has managed to pull in strong viewership, with over 101 million views on Disney Channel’s YouTube channel alone. That’s not bad at all for a return that could have easily missed the mark. And yet, here we are, heading toward the finish line.
