'Vladimir' Season 2 update may disappoint fans - here's what's happening with the comedy drama series
This story contains spoilers. Netflix's sultry comedy drama, 'Vladimir' starring Rachel Weisz, continues to generate buzz following its ambiguous ending. Based on Julia May Jonas’ best-selling debut novel of the same name, the series diverges from the original material to provide a fiery and riddling end. And one of the talking points, along with the comparison of the ending, is whether 'Vladimir' is renewed for Season 2. As disappointing as the update is, the possibility of a second season looks unlikely.
To start with, the streamer has clearly labeled 'Vladimir' as a limited series, making it a one-off. The second is the ending that suggests a conclusion that may not necessarily warrant another season. The eight-episode series spans six weeks, with The Protagonist becoming desperately obsessed with Vlad (Leo Woodall). She skips John's (John Slattery) Title IX hearing for a 'study day' with Vlad, during which they discuss each other's books. Unknown to the latter, her fantasies have fueled her next book with desire as the central theme.
The scene shifts to the final sequence: a heater sparks, and a raging fire breaks out in the cabin, where the complex events unfold. While the affair comes to light and John reaches a compromise with The Protagonist, Vlad throws a wrench in the works, saying he wants to continue the affair. Cut to the fire, John and Vlad frantically try to open the door, but The Protagonist escapes through the back door with her manuscript. The unhurt character then breaks the fourth wall, explaining how the rest of the story pans out. "I finish my book about a woman’s obsession with her younger colleague. Vlad writes a book about a tender affair with an older professor. Mine does much better. It speaks to a certain need. Oh, don’t worry. I call 911. Everybody gets out."
The ending suggests the show may not be renewed, even if it was the most unexpected. Unless Jonas and showrunner Kate Robin come up with another new storyline for a second season, 'Vladimir' will almost surely be a one-season series. Earlier, Weisz shed light on her character on the show. "My character has been married for a long time. She’s stood by her husband through thick and thin. They’re best friends. But he’s pushed her right to the edge of what she can handle with his behavior," she told Tudum. "She is a really devoted mother. She’s got one child, Sid. She’s tried really hard to keep her family together, but there have been some unusual circumstances that are putting them under quite a lot of pressure."
She further added, "The woman you meet at the beginning of the series is trying to hold on for dear life as the earth has shifted out from under her because her husband’s going to be tried for his past indiscretions. This affects her standing as a professor because, by association, her reputation is tainted. Students question how she can 'stand by her man.' She is losing her throne."
