Is ‘Scarpetta’ renewed for Season 2? Nicole Kidman-starrer leaves fans with big questions, but there’s good news
Nicole Kidman-starrer 'Scarpetta' has been one of the most-awaited thriller series of 2026. Based on Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta novels, the Prime Video series made its debut on Wednesday, March 11. The storyline follows a renowned medical examiner working on a make-or-break serial killing case linked to her past. All eight episodes of the series were released together on the streamer, and the focus now shifts to whether the crime drama will return for another season. In what comes as good news, Prime Video ordered two installments of 'Scarpetta,' and production for the next season has already begun. However, no release date or window has been set yet.
Details about the plot are unknown at the time of writing, but Liz Sarnoff, who serves as the showrunner, writer, and one of the executive producers on the show, said the new chapter picks up from the events of the Season 1 finale. "It’s half in the past and half in the present. And in the past, it’s a little bit later [than Season 1], and then the present picks up where we left off," she told TV Insider in an interview. The official logline for Season 1 reads, "This dual narrative explores Kay Scarpetta’s journey from her beginnings as a Chief Medical Examiner in the late ’90s to her present-day return to her hometown, where she resumes her former position while investigating a grisly murder." While busy investigating, Season 1 also sees Scarpetta work through a complicated relationship with her sister Dorothy Farinelli (Jamie Lee Curtis), while secrets threaten to surface and destroy everything she’s worked for. The finale, however, leaves the door open for deeper investigation, heightening anticipation for Season 2.
Season 2 is expected to see some of the major characters, including Kidman as Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Jamie Lee Curtis as her sister Dorothy, Bobby Cannavale as Detective Pete Marino, Simon Baker as FBI profiler Benton Wesley, and Ariana DeBose as Kay’s niece Lucy, reprise their roles. The 90s timeline sees a change in cast with Rosy McEwen as Kay, Amanda Righetti as Dorothy, Jake Cannavale as Marino, and Hunter Parrish as Wesley. Developed and written for television by Liz Sarnoff, 'Scarpetta' Season 1 marks Kidman's first TV project in 2026. The title is executive produced by Kidman and Per Saari, along with Curtis, through Comet Pictures. Jason Blum, Jeremy Gold, Chris Dickie, and Chris McCumber round out the list of EPs. David Gordon Green directed five episodes and also joins the roster of EPs alongside Amy Sayres. For those looking to give it a whirl, 'Scarpetta' is available to stream on Prime Video.
