Meryl Streep drops major ‘Mamma Mia! 3’ tease and we might see her team up with a Grammy-winning pop artist
The good news is 'Mamma Mia! 3' is in the works. The better news is that Meryl Streep had an optimistic answer about reprising her role as Donna Sheridan in the third film. While Universal Pictures has not announced a third film, production mastermind Judy Cramer spoke about the movie, while also adding that pop star Sabrina Carpenter is in the mix. Furthermore, Streep responded enthusiastically when asked whether he was keen to be part of the sequel.
“Damn yes.”

Speaking on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert', the actress dropped the pearl while discussing her upcoming film, 'The Devil Wears Prada 2'. Colbert asked her about her interest in 'Mamma Mia 3!' to which she said, "Damn, yes," much to the delight of fans who roared in approval. The latest comes after Cramer told Deadline about the film being actively in development. "Well, we know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen," she told the outlet. "And I mean, we brought together this amazing group of movie stars that were all connected through it, and huge friendships evolved."
The first film followed mother-daughter duo Donna (Streep) and Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) as they led their lives on a Greek island. Drama ensues when Sophie plans to marry Sky (Dominic Cooper) and begins searching for her father's identity. Colin Firth (as Harry), Stellan Skarsgård (as Bill), and Pierce Brosnan (as Sam) are all options, leading to quite the roller-coaster. In the second film, 'Here We Go Again,' the island is shocked after Donna's death. But the characters reunite for the reopening of her hotel, amid Sophie's pregnancy. Previously, Seyfried was equally enthusiastic about returning for a potential 'Mamma Mia! 3.'
Speaking to Collider in 2020, "Listen, every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat," she said. "Because we want to hang out with each other. That’s what we talked about last time, like, 'Did we ever think that we’d end up here again on an island in Croatia?' So yeah, I wish there was a Mamma Mia! 3." A potential Streep return would take the form of a flashback, but that would still be major welcome news for fans of the hit musical drama. At the time of writing, there is no official word on when the third film will be released or when production will begin. What can be confirmed is that Streep and Seyfried are happy to reprise their roles in the hit rom-com's sequel.
