‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva’ gets a major Season 2 update but it’s not what CBS fans were hoping for
The long-running love story at the heart of the ‘NCIS’ universe has come to a quiet stop, as reported by Parade. Paramount+ and CBS Studios have officially decided not to move forward with a second season of ‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva,’ bringing the spinoff to an end after a single season. The cancellation marks another farewell for one of the franchise’s most beloved pairings. Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo reunited to reprise their iconic roles as Anthony “Tony” DiNozzo and Ziva David. The series served as a continuation of their characters’ journey roughly a decade after both actors exited the original ‘NCIS.’
In a joint statement following the announcement, Weatherly and de Pablo reflected on returning to their characters and completing the story they helped build over the years. They expressed, “We feel incredibly lucky to have had the chance to play these characters once again and to tell the next chapter of Tony and Ziva’s story.” The actors noted, “Our deepest thanks go to our extraordinary cast, crew, writers, directors, and producers, and to our partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+ who helped make this dream a reality. But most of all, we want to thank the fans around the world who joined us on this adventure and finally got to see Tony and Ziva find their happily ever after.”
The 10-episode series premiered on Paramount+ on September 4 and initially delivered a respectable debut for the streamer. However, audience engagement reportedly declined sharply after launch. According to viewership data, the show experienced a major drop, over 50 percent, across its first three episodes. In ‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva,’ the story picks up after years of off-screen developments: Tony leaving NCIS to raise his daughter after believing Ziva was dead, Ziva later being revealed alive, and the pair eventually reuniting in Paris. By the time the spinoff begins, Tony and Ziva are living together and raising their daughter, Tali, away from the agency.
That sense of stability is quickly disrupted when Tony’s private security business becomes the target of a dangerous attack. Forced to go on the run across Europe, the couple must uncover who is after them while handling unresolved trust issues from their past. Alongside Weatherly and de Pablo, the series featured an ensemble cast that included Amita Suman, Maximilian Osinski, Julian Ovenden, Nassima Benchicou, Lara Rossi, Isla Gie, Terence Maynard, and James D’Arcy. Behind the scenes, the spinoff was led by showrunner John McNamara, who also served as an executive producer, as per Variety.
Weatherly and de Pablo were heavily involved creatively, joining executive producers Laurie Lieser, Christina Strain, Shelley Meals, and Mairzee Almas. The cancellation does not erase the importance of the series within the larger ‘NCIS’ timeline. For many longtime viewers, ‘Tony & Ziva’ functioned as a final chapter that allowed the characters to step away from the shadows of their past and choose family over duty. While the door remains technically open for future appearances or reunions, no additional projects involving the characters are currently in development.
