'NCIS: Sydney' Season 3 plans disrupted as CBS makes surprise scheduling change
The third season of 'NCIS: Sydney', the official spinoff of 'NCIS' on CBS, just ran into a major roadblock. As per a previously announced release calendar, 'NCIS: Sydney' was supposed to air the ninth episode of its third season on Tuesday, December 16. The episode would have constituted what is known as the show's fall finale, marking a high point before the show leaves for its winter hiatus. However, in a surprising turn of events, CBS decided to pull the episode, titled 'South of Nowhere', from the air, just hours before its release.
TVLine reports that the network has yet to provide an official explanation on the move. Certain sources have indicated that the episode will be released at a later date, but a confirmation in this regard is missing as well. While the 'NCIS' fall finale premiered per usual at 8 pm yesterday, it was followed by a rerun of the Season 22 episode known as 'Baker's Man'. If the 'NCIS: Sydney' episode, 'South of Nowhere' were to be released at a later date, it would have implications for the 'NCIS' spin-off's midseason premiere, which is slated to be on February 24, 2026.
In the absence of any official announcement, one can't help but speculate whether 'NCIS: Sydney' Episode 9 shall now air as the midseason premiere or if it shall drop at an earlier date. The network had previously released an episodic promo, which gave the audience a sneak peek of what to expect. As per CBR, the official synopsis of the episode reads, "The team races to an Antarctica research base to investigate why a climate scientist killed a colleague on Polar Night Eve—and make it out before their plane engine freezes and they're trapped in darkness for six months."
'NCIS: Sydney' made its premiere on CBS on November 10, 2023, and marks the first instance of an 'NCIS' offshoot show being shot overseas. The popular police procedural show once again assembled a fictional team of Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) agents who now collaborate with their counterparts from the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Together, the members of the team carry out their investigations involving U.S. Defence Forces personnel. The spin-off has a 6.2 out of 10 rating on IMDb, according to ScreenRant. On the other hand, the original 'NCIS' commands a 7.8 out of 10 rating and has been successfully running since 2003.
The third season of 'NCIS: Sydney' brings together the familiar cast with the addition of a few fresh faces. Olivia Swann stars as Michelle Mackey, the NCIS Supervisory Special Agent. Todd Lasance is seen as the Australian Federal Police (AFP) Second-in-Command, Sergeant Jim "JD" Dempsey. Tuuli Narkle, William McInnes, Sean Sagar, and Mavournee Hazel play other recurring supporting roles. 'NCIS: Sydney' and 'NCIS' are exclusively available on CBS and Paramount+.
