Why did ‘Euphoria’ Season 3 take so long? From strikes to tragedy, real reasons behind the four-year delay
When it comes to having a smooth sailing ride from one season to the next, 'Euphoria' has undoubtedly been out of luck. Despite the first and second seasons of the show generating an overwhelmingly positive response from the audience and critics alike, the HBO show had to overcome significant hurdles before work on the upcoming third season could even commence. For a while, it seemed as if the third and supposedly final instalment of 'Euphoria' would be shelved owing to delays and behind-the-scenes controversy. However, the uncertainty is now behind us, as HBO has officially confirmed the show's return with a third season set for April 2026.
As revealed by a report on Pedestrian.tv, the third season was greenlit in 2022, when the show was still riding the success of its sophomore season. Although principal photography was due to kick off in 2023, production had to be eventually put on hold as Hollywood underwent a series of severe strikes throughout that year. To make matters worse, 2023 was also the year when actor Angus Cloud and producer Kevin Turen, both integral parts of the show, tragically passed away. The loss of two such strong pillars was, as expected, felt heavily across the board by the entire cast and crew of the show.
The fact that director Barry Levinson and Zendaya were involved in a behind-the-scenes clash didn't help to alleviate the case for the show's third season. Levinson had to redirect his attention away from 'Euphoria' as he was then deeply involved with his other ill-received HBO show, 'The Idol'. Elsewhere, Barbie Ferreira's exit from the show came at the wrong time, derailing all efforts to bring the show back to schedule.
By the time March 2024 rolled in, all the leading actors on 'Euphoria', viz Zendaya and Sweeney, had established themselves as Hollywood A-listers, leading a busy work life and appearing in big-budget blockbusters such as 'Saltburn,' 'Challengers' and 'Dune'. The Grand Pinnacle Tribune further adds that a persistent rumor regarding the show being canceled due to Levinson's breach of HBO's protocol had been circulating for a while. HBO then had no recourse but to come out with a statement that read, "HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season. In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”
It wasn't until December 2025 that definite news about the fate of 'Euphoria' season three began to trickle in. As of this writing, it has been officially confirmed that the third season will take place five years after the events of the sophomore season. The plot will focus on Rue living in Mexico and working out desperate ways to clear Laurie's death. Levinson had previously commented, "Five years felt like a natural place because if they’d gone to college, they’d be out of college at that time. We basically pick up Rue south of the border in Mexico, in debt to Laurie, trying to come up with some very innovative ways to pay it off.” In other news, Cassie and Nate will be seen as living in the suburbs as an engaged couple. All episodes of 'Euphoria' are exclusively available on HBO Max.
