Where to watch ‘The Acolyte’? Canceled ‘Star Wars’ series officially becomes a late-night sleeper hit
'Star Wars: The Acolyte' has been one of the most polarising entries in the 'Star Wars' franchise. The series, which debuted on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, was canceled after its first season due to low viewership and a high production budget. Now the show has made a dramatic return on the streaming platform, taking a spot among the most-watched shows in April 2026. As spotted by CBR, the show appeared in ninth position on the platform's Top 10 TV shows chart.
'The Acolyte' was created by Leslye Headland, known for co-creating Netflix's 'Russian Doll'. Set in the final days of the High Republic era, the show explores previously unseen corners of the ‘Star Wars’ universe. It follows a Padawan and a Jedi Master investigating a series of shocking crimes. The show is led by Amandla Stenberg as Osha and Mae. Lee Jung-jae, best known for 'Squid Game,' plays Sol, a Jedi Master. The series also features Charlie Barnett, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, Manny Jacinto, and Dean-Charles Chapman in prominent roles.
Unfortunately, despite a diverse cast and a unique storyline, the show was largely ignored by viewers. Interestingly, 'The Acolyte' received favorable reviews from critics, who appreciated its production design, action sequences, and fresh take on familiar 'Star Wars' elements. However, viewership did not favour the show, and its staggering $230 million budget did not help either, resulting in its cancellation in August 2024. Now that the show is gaining new life on streaming, there is speculation that Disney might reconsider its decision. In an interview with Collider, Headland revealed that she had three seasons planned for the series. If renewed interest continues to grow, fans might get to see her full vision on screen.
The primary reason behind 'The Acolyte'’s return is the performance of the animated series 'Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.' The latest addition to the franchise has topped both the TV and overall charts on Disney+ for April 2026. Unfortunately, the only live-action series currently in production is 'Ahsoka,' as Lucasfilm has reduced the amount of content it is developing for the platform. The studio is now more focused on animated series and feature films. So, it is unlikely that they will revive 'The Acolyte' anytime soon, if ever. However, if they do decide to continue the story, a feature film would be the most probable option. All 'Star Wars' content is available on Disney+.
