'The Voice' Season 29 Episode 3 recap: Final Blind Auditions reveal who moves to the intense Battle Round
After three nights of hopeful singers stepping onto the stage, the Blind Auditions portion of ‘The Voice’ Season 29 has officially concluded. It took until March 9 for the final decisions to be made. Going into the episode, there was already a scoreboard battle between the coaches. At the start of the night, Adam Levine was leading the race for the most three-chair turns. He was ahead of the pack with three artists who managed to impress nearly every coach at once. Meanwhile, Kelly Clarkson was sitting just behind him with two, and John Legend had yet to snag a contestant after a three-chair turn. Why the fuss about chair turns? Because this season introduced a little twist.
Whichever coach ends up with the most artists who earned a three-chair turn receives a ‘Super Steal’ once the competition moves into the Battle rounds. And this isn’t an ordinary steal. If another coach tries to snatch the same singer, the ‘Super Steal’ wins automatically. About halfway through the night, Legend finally got himself into the race when he secured his second three-chair turn of the season. But then Clarkson managed to add Mikenley Brown to her lineup. She delivered a performance that clearly touched the panel, and ended up becoming the last artist of the season to earn a three-chair turn. And just like that, Clarkson and Levine were tied. So the producers needed a tiebreaker.
Instead of flipping a coin, they went back through the audition tally and compared another stat: how many contestants each coach convinced with two-chair turns. After crunching those numbers, Clarkson came out ahead, which means she will walk into the Battle rounds with the powerful ‘Super Steal’ advantage. The rest of the episode moved quickly after that. Teams filled up one by one, leaving only a few empty spots on the coaches’ rosters. Eventually, Legend completed his lineup, followed by Levine shortly afterward. Before the episode wrapped up, the final results of the night became clear. Several singers secured their spots in the next round and will return for the Battles.
The contestants moving forward from the latest episode include Ashley Marina, Aziz Guerra, Drew Russell, Grace Humphries, Houston Kelly, Jared Shoemaker, KJ Willis, Mikenley Brown, Natasha Blaine, and Syd Millevoi. However, not everyone was as lucky. Daniel Sovich, Jason Farol, and Mariette Gevorgian saw their journeys end during the episode, bringing their time on the show to a close before the next stage even began. Now, with the auditions finished and teams fully assembled, Season 29 heads straight into the Battles, where teammates will face off in duets while their coaches decide who stays and who goes. For viewers keeping track at home, ‘The Voice’ airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, with new episodes available for streaming the following day on Peacock.
