'The Masked Singer' Season 14 unmasks Pangolin as things get intense ahead of the finale
The masks are starting to come off, and the finish line is getting close as the competition heats up. Wednesday night’s episode of 'The Masked Singer' Season 14, which aired on March 25, saw the five remaining contestants in the spotlight. The Top 5 included Cat Witch, Crane, Pugcasso, Galaxy Girl, and Pangolin, all battling it out for a precious spot in the finale. By the end of the episode, when the votes were counted and the studio audience made their call, Pangolin ended up at the bottom of the pack. That meant the contestant's journey ended just shy of the finale.
Pangolin was unmasked and revealed to be none other than Rachel Platten, the voice behind the widely recognized anthem ‘Fight Song’. She gave the competition everything she had, especially with her final performance, a heartfelt rendition of ‘It Must Have Been Love’ by Roxette. The panel had a mixed bag of guesses right up until the mask came off, with Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg landing the correct name. Meanwhile, Ken Jeong tossed out Lea Michele, Robin Thicke leaned toward Michelle Branch, and Rita Ora guessed Vanessa Carlton. Looking back at her run, Platten didn’t exactly play it safe, moving across genres and moods with songs like ‘What a Feeling’ by Irene Cara, ‘Ironic’ by Alanis Morissette, and even ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home’ by Ozzy Osbourne.
Platten joins a packed list of unmasked names this season, including Evan Ross-Næss, Greg Mathis, Alexi Lalas, Jack Wagner, Heidi Montag, Billy Ray Cyrus, Teddi Mellencamp, Claudia Oshry, Taraji P. Henson, Tone Loc, Tiffany Haddish, Todd Chrisley, and Julie Chrisley, along with David Ortiz. With Pangolin now out of the picture, the competition tightens even more, leaving Galaxy Girl, Cat Witch, Pugcasso, and Crane as the final four heading into next week’s big finale. And if this episode proved anything, it’s that no one is guaranteed a spot, not even the ones who seem like frontrunners on paper.
For anyone just catching up, the season didn’t exactly start small. It kicked off with a full lineup of 18 masked performers, including Eggplant, Pugcasso, Queen Corgi, the Croissants, Owl, 14 Karat Carrot, Snow Cone, Galaxy Girl, High Voltage, Googly Eyes, Scarab, Handyman, Crane, Le Who Who, Pangolin, Stingray, Cat Witch, and Calla Lily. Week by week, that crowded stage slowly cleared out, until now only four contestants remain standing. And just like that, it all boils down to the final showdown. The grand finale is scheduled to air on April 1, and the last four will go head-to-head one final time.
