NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: After two decades of exploring food culture, Padma Lakshmi remained perplexed about what defines American food. Seeking an answer, she created the docuseries, 'Taste the Nation', on Hulu. The show takes viewers on a journey across America, spotlighting various immigrant communities, relishing their food, and highlighting their contributions to American cuisine. Throughout the 10-episode season, the show emphasizes the uniqueness of these communities, acknowledging their influence on American food history. As a woman of color and an immigrant herself, Padma's presence amplifies the show's natural flair and its objective to showcase diverse food cultures.

Padma's deep-seated love for food stems from her Indian roots, where her mother played a significant role. Having spent her early years in Chennai, India, with her relatives, Padma later moved to New York City to live with her mother. Fans of 'Top Chef' got a glimpse of Padma's mother, Vijaya Lakshmi, when she appeared on Season 11 of the show for a challenge. Now, let's delve further into Vijaya's story.

Meet Vijaya Lakshmi, Padma Lakshmi's single mother

The story of Padma's upbringing is one of hardship and sacrifice, but above all, it's a tale of a mother's love. Padma's early years were spent in Chennai, India, surrounded by her grandparents and extended family. Her mother was working hard as a nurse in the United States, so Padma was often apart from her. However, her mother's love for cooking was never far from her heart. She recalls the delicious vegetarian Indian dishes her mother would prepare, each dish bursting with spicy flavors that she adored. When Padma visited her grandmother's house, she would climb the painted concrete shelves in the pantry to find the hottest pickles on the top shelf. These small moments were precious to Padma, as they brought her closer to the food culture that would eventually define her career. But as much as Padma loved her mother's cooking, she would never forget the sacrifices her mother made for her family.

When Padma was just 14 years old, her mother discovered she was pregnant. It was Padma who helped her mother get an abortion, a heartbreaking decision that no child should have to make. This tragedy was just one of many that Padma's family would endure. A terrible car accident left her mother with a broken rib cage, arm, and hand. Her sternum was severed, and her heart was under massive strain from a cardiac contusion. Yet, through it all, Padma's mother never lost her love for cooking or her devotion to her family. She continued to work as a nurse for over 30 years, always putting her children's needs before her own.

'She came to this country to protect her child from an abusive partner'

Padma's life has been shaped by her experiences as an immigrant and the sacrifices her mother made to ensure her safety and well-being. Her mother, Vijaya, brought her to the United States to protect herself and her daughter from an abusive partner and give Padma a better life. As a child, Padma adopted the name, Angelique, believing that she needed a Western name to fit in. But as she grew older, she came to understand the importance of honoring her heritage and her mother's legacy. When she became a US citizen, she officially changed her name to Padma Lakshmi as a tribute to her mother. She wanted to acknowledge the sacrifices her mother made for her and celebrate her own identity as a woman of Indian descent. Padma's father left when she was just two years old, leaving her mother to raise her on her own.

Despite the challenges they faced as a single-parent family, Padma's mother was determined to give her daughter the best possible life. As an immigrant, Padma has experienced both the joys and the struggles of living in a new country. She remembers, in an essay, the overwhelming sense of relief she felt when she caught her first glimpse of her mother at JFK airport, holding an afghan she had knitted for her. To Padma, that moment represented the world becoming whole again, a new beginning full of promise and hope. Throughout her life, Padma has embraced her identity as an immigrant and used her platform to highlight the experiences of other immigrants and celebrate their contributions to American culture.

'Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi' is scheduled to premiere on May 5, 2023, on Hulu.
