Who is Julian Kalel? ‘American Idol’ singer eliminated after mental health break and comeback attempt
The April 6 episode of ‘American Idol’ brought a result that many fans did not see coming. And for one contestant in particular, it marked the end of a journey that had already taken a few unexpected turns along the way. Julian Kalel, a 19-year-old singer from El Paso, was eliminated right at the start of the night. The announcement came early in the episode, delivered by host Ryan Seacrest, who had the task of revealing the delayed results from the previous week. Due to a massive wave of votes during the earlier ‘Songs of Faith’ episode, the show had held off on confirming who would move forward. That delay stretched the tension out for days, and when the answer finally arrived, it landed hard. Kalel’s name came up alongside Jake Thistle’s, placing both singers outside the Top 12 before they even had a chance to perform again.
What made the moment stand out even more was everything Kalel had already been through to get there. His first appearance on Season 23 caught attention not just because of his voice, but because of what he chose to share. When he initially auditioned, he performed an original track titled ‘Surrender’, a song that spoke openly about anxiety and depression. The judges saw something in him right away. Luke Bryan even went as far as saying, “You might win this thing.” With support from Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood as well, Kalel earned his golden ticket and seemed set for a long run.
But things did not go as expected. Before reaching Hollywood Week, Kalel made the difficult decision to step away from the show. He later explained that he needed to focus on his mental health, something he did not want to ignore while dealing with the pressures of a national competition. His story did not end there, though. He returned this season with a new sense of direction and a different song: ‘Lone Guitar’. His second run on the show saw him progress through multiple rounds, including the Top 30 and later the Top 14. During that time, he continued to receive positive feedback. After performing an acoustic version of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’, Luke Bryan noted that Kalel still had “so much star potential and star quality.”
That’s why his elimination felt like a sudden stop. The voting placed him in the bottom group, and without the chance to sing in the ‘Judges’ Song Contest’, his run came to an end sooner than many had expected. The episode continued with the remaining contestants competing for a place in the Top 11. By the end of the night, Rae and Jesse Findling found themselves in the bottom two. Thanks to the judges’ save, Richie chose to keep Rae in the competition, which meant Jesse’s time on the show also came to a close. Those who have secured their place in the Top 11 are Braden Rumfelt, Brooks Rosser, Chris Tungseth, Daniel Stallworth, Hannah Harper, Jordan McCullough, Keyla Richardson, Kyndal Inskeep, Lucas Leon, Philmon Lee, and Rae.
