The latest episode of ‘American Idol’ Season 24 came with a bit of baggage from the previous week. After a voting delay left fans hanging, the April 6 broadcast kicked off by finally revealing who made it into the Top 12 and who didn’t. Last week, host Ryan Seacrest stepped in to clear things up, explaining that the results had been delayed because the show received an unusually high number of votes. The team wanted to make sure everything was counted correctly before announcing anything. All 14 singers had been rehearsing and were set to perform, only to find out at the very beginning of the episode that two of them would be heading home. Within minutes, Seacrest announced that Julian Kalel and Jake Thistle had been eliminated, based on the previous week’s votes.

The show then moved on, with the Top 12 finally confirmed. The night’s theme brought a nostalgic twist with the annual Judges’ Song Contest, which was centered around music from the 1990s. Judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood each selected songs for every contestant, but the singers had no clue who picked which track. Each artist received three options (one from each judge) and had to choose which one to perform while also guessing who picked it for them. By the end of the night, it was Richie who came out on top in the friendly competition. Seven of the Top 12 contestants ended up choosing songs he had selected, giving him bragging rights for the week. Underwood followed with three picks, while Bryan landed in third place with two. But the episode wasn’t just about the contestants and judges.

There was a fun blast from the past as several familiar faces from ABC’s classic TGIF lineup showed up in the lounge area. Fans got to see Andrea Barber from ‘Full House’, Mark Curry from ‘Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper’, Danielle Fishel from ‘Boy Meets World’, Danica McKellar from ‘The Wonder Years’, Holly Robinson Peete, Caroline Rhea, and Reginald VelJohnson from ‘Family Matters’ cheering on the contestants. Meanwhile, voting took place live as the performances aired. This season has shaken things up by moving away from the show’s dedicated app. Instead, viewers are casting their votes through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, alongside the usual text and online options. As the night moved toward its final stretch, the focus shifted back to eliminations.

After all the performances and live voting, two contestants found themselves at the bottom: Rae and Jesse Findling. That’s when Lionel Richie stepped in with the judges’ save. Since he had won the song contest earlier in the episode, he had the power to rescue one of the bottom two. He chose to keep Rae in the competition, which meant Jesse Findling’s journey came to an end. By the time the credits started rolling, the Top 11 had officially been locked in. The singers moving forward are Braden Rumfelt, Brooks, Chris Tungseth, Daniel Stallworth, Hannah Harper, Jordan McCullough, Keyla Richardson, Kyndal Inskeep, Lucas Leon, Philmon Lee, and Rae.
