One Piece’ Season 2 ends with a twist that quietly sets up the massive Alabasta war in Season 3
Contains spoilers for 'One Piece' Season 2
The ending of 'One Piece' Season 2 perfectly sets up Season 3, which is already in development. The Netflix live-action series follows Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and the Straw Hats on their next adventure, working on the same template as the first season. After hinting that they would enter the Grand Line in their quest for One Piece, the second season sees them do just that as they encounter new foes in their journey into the unknown. Their arrival sees them garner the attention of Baroque Works — a group of deadly criminals. Luffy and his team of Straw Hats deal with the new nemesis, each of whom comes with extraordinary and evil Devil Fruit powers. The final scene of the last episode drops a major tease for Season 3 in the form of the war for Alabasta.
Fans who watched the series will know that the identity of Mr. 0, the Baroque Works head honcho, was a mystery for a major part of the series. The character is revealed in his entirety in the final scene as Sir Crocodile, a deadly pirate (played by Joe Manganiello). His sheer coldness is on full display as he remains unfazed despite the hits his group takes. The finale also confirms that Miss All Sunday's real name is Nico Robin. It is revealed that she carries a mammoth 79 million Berry bounty.
The major plotline for Season 3 is the Alabasta narrative. The kingdom is in the middle of a terrible Civil War, and Crocodile has big plans to create further chaos. Vivi's (Charithra Chandran) reveal as the escaped princess from Alabasta also introduces another storyline that the upcoming season will explore. The Alabasta saga puts Luffy and the Straw Hats further into the deep end against Crocodile and the Baroque Works. This will be their toughest test on the high seas, making Season 3 a highly anticipated watch.
In related news, Chandran shared her view on her character. "In Season 2, Vivi just thinks that Miss All Sunday is a psychopath and that it’s a game and she’s toying with her," she told Variety. "Beyond that, in Season 2, she doesn’t think about anything. I don’t think that she really respects Miss All Sunday, because Vivi is all about dignity and justice and purpose and other people. And because she doesn’t know Miss All Sunday’s backstory, she just thinks that Miss All Sunday is a crazy person. I don’t think there’s much more to it than that," she added.
As for 'One Piece' Season 3, the live-action series is currently filming in South Africa. The series experienced a lengthy delay between the first two seasons after the strikes that brought Hollywood's much-awaited content to a grinding halt. At the time of this writing, speculations are rife that Season 3 might see a late 2027 or an early 2028 release, but an official confirmation is awaited. On the cast front, Godoy is set to reprise his role as Monkey D. Luffy, leader of the Straw Hat Pirates, whose crew comprises Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Romero), and Sanji (Taz Skylar).
