Hulu's post-apocalyptic thriller 'Paradise' heads out of the bunker to explore the ground reality in Season 2. But after watching the first three episodes, fans are left with more questions than answers. As Season 2 rolled out brand new episodes, new characters like Link and Annie appeared as surface dwellers trying to locate the mysterious bunker. On the other hand, Sterling K. Brown's Xavier Collins is on his own quest to find his missing wife, Dr. Teri Rodgers-Collins. Among the most puzzling mysteries is who, or rather what, is Alex?

The name first comes up in the Season 2 premiere, when the new character Link (Thomas Doherty) asks Annie (Shailene Woodley) to join his group to go search for a rumored Colorado billionaire's bunker. But Link’s friend, Geiger (Michael McGrady), reminds him not to press Annie as they have more important matters to deal with: "We gotta get to the bunker, get inside, and kill Alex.” Just as you start to think that Alex is another character living inside the bunker that we haven't yet seen, 'Paradise' throws another curveball in episode 3 when Alex's name flashes again, but in a very different context.

In episode 3, flashback scenes set in a pre-bunker world show Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson) trying to buy Henry Miller's (Patrick Fischler) company, Vestige Quantum. Miller, a university professor, teaches a course on 'Advanced Wave Functions, Superposition, and Quantum Entanglement,' with Link being one of his students. But Link is revealed to be no ordinary student, as his understanding of the concept far surpasses that of his fellow students, and soon becomes a partner in Miller's business.

Furthermore, when Billy Pace (Jon Beavers) visits Miller's house at Sinatra's orders to kill him (for refusing her offer), he finds Miller's wife bedridden from Huntington’s disease. Miller, anticipating his death, injects a lethal dose into his wife's IV before bidding her farewell with the words, “I’ll see you soon, my love. Goodbye, Alex.” But is she the same Alex that Link's group wants dead? We highly doubt that, as nothing is so straightforward on 'Paradise.' A screenshot of Sinatra from the trailer of 'Paradise' Season 2 (Image Source: YouTube | @Hulu)

Another major clue from episode 3 showed Dr. Gabriela (Sarah Shahi) and others discovering that Sinatra was diverting significant power from the bunker to her secret side project, which remains unnamed. Gabriela listens in on Sinatra's private conversation with her home caregiver, Carmen, where the billionaire inquires about Alex. Carmen assures her that 'Alex is well' and adds that the power issue has been fixed. This makes it seem as if ‘Alex’ refers to a classified initiative known as Project Alex rather than a specific individual. When Sinatra asks for an estimate, her housekeeper merely replies that she's 'getting closer.' Based on the conversation, it seems more likely that Alex is not a person but rather some sort of secret technology powered by the bunker's power supply. This theory also ties in with Miller's technology related to Quantum Entanglement, which, without getting into the weeds, means that entangled pairs of particles, like photons or electrons, can remain connected over vast distances and time.

Furthermore, Link describes the bunker to Annie in the premiere episode as something mysterious. He says, “There’s something there, something nobody knows about. Something so dangerous, if I tried to explain it to you, you wouldn’t understand…”  As far as we can tell, Sinatra's side project is related to an advanced experimental theory tied to Vestige Quantum’s research. To find out more about the true nature of Alex, tune in on Mondays to watch the latest episodes of 'Paradise' on Hulu and Disney+.
