Who is the second 'Jeopardy! Champions Wildcard' finalist? A near-perfect semifinal leaves viewers speechless
The race to the finals of 'Jeopardy! Champions Wildcard' heated up this week; the tournament's second finalist was named at the semifinals episode that aired on January 13. While Monday's game locked in Cameron Berry's spot, Tuesday night belonged to Jonathan Hugendubler. The semifinal matchup featured three competitors from across the country. Hugendubler, an adjunct professor and trivia host from Baltimore, Maryland, faced off against Michelle Tsai, a tutor from Honolulu, Hawaii, and Bill McKinney, a hospitality executive from San Diego, California.
Hugendubler came out strong on the first 'Jeopardy!' round, answering three clues in a row correctly to seize an early lead. By the time Tsai uncovered the first Daily Double on the 10th clue, Hugendubler was sitting at $4,000. Tsai, who had $1,600 at that point, chose to go all in with a true Daily Double. The clue, from the category "Our Love's In Jeopardy," read: "Vronsky loves Kitty, thinks this title woman, 'but me he thinks of with hatred, and is sorry he had anything to do with me.'" Tsai correctly responded, "Who is Anna Karenina?" doubling her score to $3,200. Heading into the first commercial break, Hugendubler held $5,000, with Tsai close behind at $4,800.
McKinney struggled to find his footing early, trailing with $1,200. The remainder of the first round turned into a back-and-forth battle between Hugendubler and Tsai. Hugendubler ultimately ended the round in first place with $6,800, barely edging out Tsai, who finished at $6,600. McKinney closed the round at $1,600, as per TV Insider. 'Double Jeopardy!' began with Tsai briefly pulling into the lead after the first clue, but Hugendubler quickly regained control when he located the first Daily Double of the round on clue three. Sitting at $8,800, he confidently wagered everything.
The category was 'Notable American Women', and the clue read: "Her other works about South Seas cultures included Growing Up in New Guinea & Balinese Character." Hugendubler correctly answered, "Who is (Margaret) Mead?" The successful true 'Daily Double' rocketed his score to $17,600. From there, Hugendubler went on an impressive run, answering five more clues correctly. Meanwhile, McKinney hit a rough patch. After missing two clues, his score dipped into the negatives. Hugendubler later found the second 'Daily Double' on clue 20 with $26,000. He then wagered $5,000.
In the category 'Ferry Thee Well', the clue was: "This city's ferry system is the world's largest, serving 2 continents & 100 million people annually, a ferry large number." Hugendubler nailed it with "What is Istanbul?", pushing his total to $31,000. McKinney managed to recover slightly by answering three clues correctly toward the end of the round, finishing 'Double Jeopardy!' with $1,200. Hugendubler ended the round with $30,600, while Tsai held second place at $13,400. Final 'Jeopardy!' brought the category 'New Testament Greek'. The clue read: "A famous passage in Matthew 6 refers to Kleptai, meaning them." Only one contestant came up with the correct response.
McKinney answered, "Who are the three wisemen?" which was incorrect, and he wagered $0. Tsai responded with "Who are tax collectors?", also incorrect, after wagering $31. Hugendubler, however, delivered the right response: "Who is the thief?" He chose not to wager any of his winnings, sealing his victory with $30,600, according to Fandom. With the win, Hugendubler officially joins Cameron Berry in the 'Jeopardy! Champions Wildcard' finals. One final semifinal game will air Wednesday night to determine the third finalist, completing the three-player lineup for the two-night championship event scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
