Will 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' movie arrive this Christmas? Creator Jenny Han shares a major update
For 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' fans, if the movie adaptation of the romantic drama will land this Christmas, the series's creator, Jenny Han, just shared a new update. Unfortunately, the wait for the highly anticipated movie will be longer than expected. Appearing at The Wrap's 2025 Power Women Summit on December 2, Han revealed that the script for 'The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie' has been completed. For the unversed, the show's movie adaptation was announced after the season three finale premiered on Prime Video in September 2025.
During the Summit, Han was asked about the progress she had made on the upcoming film. She informed that she had completed writing the script. "I just wrote it. We have not filmed anything yet," Han said, adding that the fans hoping to watch the film this Christmas will have to reset their expectations. "I know that everyone was hoping that it was coming out this Christmas, but unfortunately, not happening, not possible," she said. So, when will the movie finally release?
In an October 2025 interview with Variety, Han had disclosed that 'The Summer I Turned Pretty: The Movie' won't release next year as well. Han had shared, "I don't know when it will be out, but I don't think it's safe to say next year because we haven't filmed it yet. I honestly, really want that extra time, because it's just getting the actors a little bit closer to adulthood. We're getting to see Belly at 15, turning 16, and then seeing her as this young woman. And now Lola is 22! I think that I always wanted some distance for the movie, so I'm really glad to get that breathing space." Han's statements indicate that the movie won't reach viewers before 2027.
At the time of writing this article, Han had yet to reveal any details about the plot of the forthcoming film. In a joint September interview with Deadline, Lola Tung, who played the role of Belly Conklin, and Chris Britney, who essayed the character of Conrad Fisher in the show, also spoke about the upcoming film. Tung said, "I'm sure Jenny has, has a great — she apparently has a first draft. So hopefully, maybe soon we'll find out." On the other hand, Britney jokingly remarked, "Thank god I'm not in the writer's room, because I would write in some dumb s**t."
