'The Pitt' ended its 15-episode second installment on April 16 on HBO Max. Fans are still thinking about the show's ending, which left the fate of several characters uncertain. The medical drama is already confirmed to return for Season 3 in early 2027, with the show's third chapter set four months after the 4th of July shift of Season 2. When the series returns, Dr. Robby will presumably be back from his sabbatical and, based on his last scene in the finale, ready to face his mental health issues that plagued him all season long. But what about other characters like Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, Frank Langdon, and Dennis Whitaker? Let's take a look at where their storylines are headed in Season 3 of 'The Pitt.'

Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi's future

In the penultimate episode of Season 2, Al-Hashimi informed Robby that she suffers from a seizure disorder that has caused her to space out while treating patients. Robby gave her an ultimatum in the finale, "Either you tell the administration about your diagnosis or I will." Fans worrying about whether Al-Hashimi will return in Season 3 can rest assured, as actress Sepideh Moafi revealed that she will likely be back next season. She told the 'Today Show,' right after the finale's premiere, "I think the plan is to have me back." Moreover, the showrunner, R. Scott Gemmill, also noted that he wants to "explore" her diagnosis in Season 3. He told TVLine on April 9, "With Baran, it's that classic ‘physician, heal thyself’ question. What kind of patient is she going to be? Is she in denial about what she's facing? It certainly seems like she's been pushing it to the edge, and now she's confronted with the reality of whether she can continue to practice medicine."

Throughout Season 2, the ER chief, Dr. Robby, was seen spiraling with burnout and unresolved PTSD. He also hinted at being suicidal and not returning from his motorcycle trip to the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in Canada. Although the Season 2 finale didn't delve into his struggles or offer a clear resolution, Gemmill told Gold Derby on April 16 that the third season will focus on Robby's past and his recovery. "Clearly he's in a very bad place and we should be worried about him. I'm worried about him, you know? He needs to take steps to get better and he hasn't. Until he does, things are only going to get worse. We'll start to reveal what Robby's backstory was and it wasn't always pleasant. He has his own demons that he's never really dealt with. [We’re] really focusing on Robby's journey through mental health and hopefully getting better."

The mystery of Whitaker's badge

'The Pitt' Season 2 finale revealed that Whitaker's missing badge was found by a patient, John Digby, who clipped it to his shirt and stole a CPR dummy before taking off into the night. At first, it seemed like a small, hilarious moment meant to offset the show's serious tone. However, actor Gerran Howell has confirmed that the moment leads into a larger storyline in Season 3. He told Gold Derby on April 17, "Of all the threads that are out there, that is one thing that does have a conclusion for sure. I hope it's satisfying for people. It really has been a big mystery." Moreover, Howell shared his thoughts on whether his character will accept Robby's offer to shift into his bachelor pad while he's on sabbatical. "It's a hard offer to turn down. I think there's a part of Whitaker that feels maybe I'm just getting on [Santos’] nerves, so maybe it's for the best. ... Whatever he decides to do, it's going to be rough, I think," the actor added in the same interview.

Is Langdon headed towards relapse?

Following his addiction scandal in Season 1, Dr. Frank Langdon was allowed to return to the PTMC only after he went to rehab and committed to his recovery. His return was made possible under strict conditions, which included mandatory drug tests. While speaking about his character's future with Gold Derby on April 15, actor Frank Ball hinted that Langdon's relapse could be covered in Season 3. "I was reminded many times that half the doctors that go through substance-abuse treatment relapse, and I was reminded frequently that relapse is part of the addiction journey. I don't know how it's going to work out. … It’s useful to not know where the plane is headed exactly, but it doesn't mean it's exactly comfortable for sure."

Laetitia Hollard, who was seen briefly as the new nurse Emma Nolan in Season 2, will be back in the third season, Gemmill confirmed to TVLine on April 16. He added that medical students Joy Kwon (Irene Choi) and James Ogilvie (Lucas Iverson) will also make brief appearances in Season 3. Moreover, night shift's senior resident, Dr. Parker Ellis (Ayesha Harris), will move to the day shift as Harris has been promoted to series regular in Season 3. "It just felt like an idea to seize one of the night shift doctors working a day shift for a change just to change up the dynamic," Gemmill told Gold Derby
