The 'Game of Thrones' franchise continues its successful expansion, building on the positive reviews generated by the debut season of its spinoff show 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' and the previously aired 'House of the Dragon' Season 3. It has now been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter that the world created by author George R. R. Martin will make its theatrical debut in a stage production organized by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre this Summer.

The upcoming stage production had been making the rounds across rumour mills for a long time before being officially confirmed yesterday. The play's title is 'Game of Thrones: The Mad King' and is based on Martin's novels. Duncan Macmillan has adapted the story for the stage, and the play is being directed by Dominic Cooke. The events of the play unfold during the infamous Tourney at Harrenhal, which subsequently led to Robert's Rebellion, a landmark event referenced multiple times on the HBO show.

The official description of the stage play reads, "Enter the world before. A long winter thaws in Harrenhal, and spring is promised. At a lavish banquet on the eve of a jousting tournament, lovers meet, and revelers speculate about who will contend. But in the shadows, amid growing unease at the bloodthirsty actions of the realm’s merciless Mad King, dissenters from his inner circle anxiously advance a treasonous plot. Far away, the drums of battle sound. Family bonds, ancient prophecies, and the sacred line of succession will be tested in a dangerous campaign for power. Who will survive? Who will rise? Wars aren’t won by those with most cause, but whose story’s best told."

The play is scheduled to have its world premiere at Stratford-upon-Avon's Royal Shakespeare Theatre this summer. As per the established lore of the 'Game of Thrones' franchise, the Tourney at Harrenhal eventually led to the downfall of House Targaryen. Jaime Lannister, Ned Stark, and Robert Baratheon were present at these events and are expected to appear in the stage show. Martin himself serves as the creator and executive producer, and recently released a statement highlighting his joy, "When I first wrote Game of Thrones, I never imagined that it would be anything other than a book. It was a place for my imagination to exist without limits. To my great surprise, it was adapted for a series, and viewers have been able to enter the world of my imagination through the medium of television. For my work to now be adapted for the stage is something I did not expect but welcome with great enthusiasm and excitement. Theatre offers something unique. A place for mine and the audience’s imagination to meet and hopefully create something magical." 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' airs the eighth and final episode of its debut season on Sunday, February 22, on HBO Max
