‘The Voice’ is introducing major twists in Season 29 but one big voting change may frustrate fans
‘The Voice’ is coming back for Season 29, but don’t expect the same four red chairs, the same weekly rhythm, or even the same voting routine you’ve gotten used to yelling about from your couch. This time, the show is rebranding the whole experience as ‘The Voice: Battle of Champions,’ as announced by NBC. First big twist? Only three coaches, not four. Returning to claim their spots are Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine, all former winners. It’s a tighter table now. Furthermore, along with the official announcement was a detail that might leave longtime viewers shocked: there will be no live shows.
There will be no nationwide voting from millions of fans tapping their phones during commercial breaks. This time, America is off the ballot. Instead, the semi-finals, featuring the Top 9, and the finale, consisting of the Top 4, will be decided by a newly formed voting block. The voters will be “super fans,” including former contestants from earlier seasons, who will be seated in the audience and cast their ballots in-studio. NBC tried something similar before with ‘America's Got Talent: The Champions,’ where super fans helped determine outcomes. Now, that strategy is crossing over.
Then there’s the ‘Triple Turn Competition.’ Normally, coaches celebrate when multiple chairs spin for a contestant. This time, it’s practically currency. Each coach will compete to secure the most three-chair turns during the Blind Auditions. Whoever racks up the highest count walks away with an advantage heading into the next stage. And because things weren’t tense enough, team sizes have been reduced from 14 artists to just 10 per coach. This means fewer spots and coaches being choosier from the jump. No more “maybe I’ll take a chance.” It’s yes or nothing.
The prize for dominating the ‘Triple Turn’ tally? A ‘Super Steal.’ The ‘Super Steal’ can be used once during the Battle rounds, and when it’s activated, it overrides any competing coach’s attempt to grab that same contestant. But wait, there’s more. Each coach will bring back two fan-favorite artists from their previous seasons to compete in what’s being called an ‘In-Season All-Star Competition.’ These returning performers won’t just pop in for a cameo. They’ll face off in head-to-head sing-offs, representing the coach who originally mentored them. The coach whose ‘All-Stars’ earn the most victories gets a bonus in the finale: a guaranteed second finalist in the last round.
For this special showdown episode, the coaches will call in CeeLo Green, one of the original ‘Voice’ coaches, to sit in and determine the winners of each ‘All-Star’ battle. Kelly Clarkson returning to her red chair is, without question, a win for fans who missed her humor and quick comebacks. She stepped away when ‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ relocated production from Los Angeles to New York City, which complicated filming schedules. Fans can catch their favorite coaches in action when Season 29 premieres on February 23.
