'The Rookie' Season 8 sets its sights beyond LA: Premiere date, streaming info and what to expect
Season 8 of ABC's long-running police drama 'The Rookie' is officially arriving soon, and the series is shaking up its familiar formula in a big way. For the first time, John Nolan and his fellow officers are stepping far beyond the streets of Los Angeles, launching the new season with an international storyline. 'The Rookie' Season 8 premieres on Tuesday, January 6, at 10 pm ET/9 pm CT on ABC, as per USA Today. For viewers who prefer streaming, the episode will be available on Hulu starting Wednesday, January 7. Hulu offers multiple subscription options for fans looking to catch up on the series.
The most affordable plan with ads costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 annually, while eligible students can access the same plan for $1.99 per month. Hulu also provides bundle options with Disney+ and ESPN+, with prices ranging from $10.99 to $19.99 depending on ad preferences. Free trials are available for new subscribers, though payment details are required at sign-up. Moreover, fans recently got their first extended look at the upcoming season through a trailer that revealed the show's surprising new setting.
The preview opens with Nolan (Nathan Fillion), Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan), Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz), and other members of the LAPD heading to Prague as part of a joint operation with Interpol and the FBI. The mission centers on tracking down a dangerous international weapons dealer. Adding tension to the trip is Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan), who is under close watch after previously attempting to escape custody. Nolan and Lopez are tasked with keeping an eye on her. Stevens manages to persuade her handlers to take a brief break from work to explore the historic city.
What begins as sightseeing quickly spirals into chaos when the group is pulled into a violent confrontation. Season 8 introduces major developments that could permanently alter the characters' personal and professional lives. Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore) makes a bold announcement by declaring his intention to run for District Attorney of Los Angeles. Nolan's personal life is also thrown into uncertainty when Bailey receives an unexpected career opportunity. She is offered a transfer to Washington, D.C. However, the opportunity comes with a painful tradeoff.
Nolan is told that relocating would mean restarting his law enforcement career from the very beginning. The trailer doesn't shy away from unresolved threats either. Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave), one of the show's most notorious antagonists, is shown back in custody following the events of season 7. However, any sense of closure is short-lived. The preview ends with a frantic struggle that results in Stevens slipping away once again, according to The Mirror. ABC teased the ambitious scope of the new season in a social media post shared on December 16, promising "explosive action, unexpected alliances, and cases that stretch across continents."
