What happened in 'The Voice' Season 23 Episode 9?
The Battle Rounds continued in Episode 8, and the competition was fierce! Five talented artists took to the stage, with four emerging victorious. But as always, there were twists and turns along the way and Episode 9 revealed them all.
Team Kelly's D.Smooth and ALI kicked off the night with their soulful rendition of ‘Unaware’. Kelly's strategy of pairing artists with their own unique lane was evident, but it was clear that both singers were comfortable in the same lane. Kelly had some constructive feedback for them during the rehearsal, and the decision came down to who could handle the pressure on stage. Blake gave his vote to D.Smooth, but Niall and Chance were all about ALI. It was a tough call for Kelly, who had to choose between two stellar performers, but in the end, she sided with the majority and kept ALI on her team. Chance saw this as an opportunity and went in for the steal, but Kelly shut it down with her playoff pass, sending D.Smooth straight to the playoffs!
For Blake's first match-up of the night, Carlos Rising and Grace West delivered a powerful performance of 'I Told You So'. Blake's belief in their ability to deliver a message shone through, and despite Carlos' initial hesitation about singing a country song, he rose to the challenge. The coaches were split on the decision, with Niall highlighting the contrast between Carlos' husky tone and Grace's piercing tone, while Kelly leaned towards Grace but acknowledged Carlos' potential. Chance remained impartial, leaving the final decision to Blake, who chose Grace for her authenticity and potential in Nashville.
In the next fiery match-up, returning artist Tiana Goss and the talented Kate Cosentino teamed up for a sizzling rendition of 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'. Coach Niall warned them about over-singing and reminds them that performing on TV is very different from a live gig. The judges are blown away by their star quality, but it's Kate who comes out on top.
Meanwhile, Team Kelly's Holly Brand and Katie Beth Forakis take on the pop-country hit 'Lady Like'. With Kelly's guidance, the duo brings their A-game to the rehearsal studio, impressing the judges with their unique styles. Holly's big voice wins out in the end, but Katie Beth's amazing range is not to be underestimated.
In Team Chance, Chloe Abbott and Nariyella go head-to-head in an unforgettable performance of 'I Want You Around'. Chance challenges the duo to make the song their own and they rise to the occasion, adding in some cool "responding lines" to elevate the performance. It's a tough decision, but Nariyella's smooth tone and control clinch the victory.
Finally, powerhouse vocalists Ryley Tate Wilson and Michael B battle it out with 'Heartbreak Anniversary'. Coach Niall encourages them to amp up the harmonies and really feel the song. The judges are split, but it's Michael's effortless runs and supreme control that ultimately win the day. With so much talent on display, it's clear that the competition is heating up and only the best will make it to the next round.
