‘Star Wars’ fans will be disappointed after learning about yet another cancellation. As reported by Variety, an original unannounced standalone ‘Star Wars’ movie has been canceled by Lucasfilm. The storyline revolved around an “unspecified robot” and was supposed to have original characters, but has unfortunately been canceled. According to Simon Fernaby, actor, comedian, and co-writer of ‘Paddington’ 2, ‘Wonka’, ‘Magic Faraway Tree’, and more, the idea was about a robot and did not involve any key ‘Star Wars’ characters. “They were like, we really need it to be a ‘Star Wars’ movie, which is probably why it didn’t get turned into a ‘Star Wars’ movie! But we never really nailed it.”

Referring to Disney and Lucasfilm, Fernaby noted that the project was not entirely shelved. He added, “(Disney) basically said, ‘It’s not right for Star Wars, but do you want to rework it as a sci-fi film?’ So we’re working on that now.” Hence, the canceled ‘Star Wars’ movie is being worked on as a sci-fi film. Since then, Fernaby and Paul King, the collaborator on the project, started working together on ‘Wonka’.

Fans might know King from his directorial projects, including ‘Paddington’, ‘Paddington 2’, and he was also supposed to direct and co-write the said ‘Star Wars’ film. However, after it was decided that it wouldn’t be a ‘Star Wars’ film, the two have been co-writing the revised version of the script. The cancellation news comes after Disney’s previously canceled projects, including Patty Jenkins’ ‘Rogue Squadron’ and Kevin Feige’s unannounced film, among others.

Notably, the franchise’s currently active projects include ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’, which is under Jon Favreau’s direction, along with a new Jedi Order/ Rey film, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. James Mangold’s directorial ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ is also in the works. Additionally, a new trilogy is developing under Simon Kinberg’s writing. Furthermore, Lucasfilm has been working on streaming projects including ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Star Wars: The Bad Batch.’ As for their current lineup, it includes ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2, which is set to premiere in 2027. Along with that, there is also Shawn Levy’s ‘Starfighter,’ which will feature Ryan Gosling and is set to be released in May 2027.
