Early Life

Ninotchka "Nina" García was born in May 1965, in Barranquilla, Colombia. She was born into a wealthy family and moved to the United States when she was just fifteen years old. Despite spending most of her life in the US, Nina hasn't forgotten her roots and is very proud of her Colombian heritage. "I grew up in Barranquilla, Colombia, the land of Shakira and Sofia Vergara. We’re all from the same city," she shared in an interview, as reported by Glamour Fame

From an early age, Nina was interested in fashion. The outlet also reported how Nina named her mother- Cecilia de García as her inspiration to pursue a career in the fashion industry. "My mother sparked my interest in fashion and inspired me to work in the industry, She always paid a lot of attention into how she put herself together. She was not a size two or four, but more like a size 14. My mother really embraced her many curves. She knew how to dress her body and took great pride in that."

Nina graduated from Boston University in 1987. Still hungry for knowledge, Nina enrolled herself in Ecole Superieure de la Mode in France and earned a second B.A. from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1992. After finishing her internship, Nina turned her focus onto fashion magazines.

In 2000, Nina was named as the Fashion Director of Elle, and held that position until 2008. She also became a judge on 'Project Runway' during this time in 2004. In April 2008 reports of Nina being fired from her job at Elle began doing rounds. Neither the magazine giant nor Nina ever released a statement about it. From 2008 to 2012, Nina served as the fashion director of Marie Claire. She was promoted to creative director in 2012. In 2017, she returned to Elle as Editor-in-Chief.
