What happened to Emma's arm? ‘Love Is Blind’ Season 10 contestant explains how she got the scars: ‘I had…’
One of the most beautiful aspects of 'Love Is Blind' is that it focuses on personalities rather than appearances. Season 10 introduced a contestant with visible scars on her arm, and during the course of the initial episodes, she shared the real story behind them. In a heartfelt moment, Ohio native Emma Betsinger opened up about her scars as she wanted her dates to know her story before the in-person reveal. She shared that she was born with birthmarks covering her arm before she was adopted from China at the age of three and raised in Ohio by her adoptive parents.
Doctors discovered that Emma's birthmarks were not just cosmetic, as they were high-risk and could have caused melanoma. By the time she was seven, she had already undergone 10 surgeries to remove them and still requires annual checks. The procedures were particularly intense, given her young age, and left permanent scarring on her arm. Emma revealed that these experiences affected her self-confidence, especially when it came to dating, as she has often felt self-conscious about how others might perceive her scars. She told Tudum, "That's why I didn't date a lot in middle school or high school. Getting into college and coming into my own, I also definitely became very self-aware of what my body looked like. Meeting someone out in the wild, they ask [me about them], but it wouldn't be like 'tell me more.' It's more like, "What happened to your arm?"
She then explained that her scars, along with being a Chinese adoptee raised in a white family, made it hard for her to be her real self in past relationships, saying, "I love my family, but [being adopted] was definitely something that integrated into how my identity and my self-esteem were formed." Emma shared that she often held back in relationships out of fear, saying, "I had these things I wanted to talk about [in romantic relationships], but I was so afraid that if I did, they would run away. And so I kept at surface level, and I think that also did me a disservice because I was hiding a very major part of who I was and what I wanted my partner to share with me."
Talking about Emma's dating life in 'Love Is Blind' Season 10, the retail merchandiser initially had a brush with heartbreak when she was rejected by Connor. The rejection hit Emma hard and made her contemplate exiting the experiment altogether. However, as fate had it, she found a second chance at love with Mike. Her connection with the sales manager not only put her at ease but also gave her a new perspective. Yet, a significant challenge soon emerged as Mike knew he wanted to become a father, while Emma remained uncertain about having children. Despite this, he proposed, hopeful that she might reconsider in the future. Once they arrived in Mexico, Mike continued to gently encourage Emma to think about motherhood, confident that the strong bond they shared could help ease her doubts and guide her decision.
