'Shrinking' Season 3 episode 10 recap: Jimmy finally hits his breaking point as family tensions explode
With the recently aired 'Shrinking' Season 3 episode 10, Apple TV+ has just made it clear that things won't be getting any easier for Jason Segel's Jimmy any time soon. Although Jimmy has been reeling under the pressure of his unspoken feelings towards his largely absent father all season long, episode 10 ultimately proved to be the last straw on the proverbial camel's back. On top of it all, Jimmy had to go through Alice's graduation on his own, after Randy hit the road the same morning. Towards the end of the episode, Jimmy found himself in a corner from which he didn't see a way out.
Randy had previously promised to depart on the day of Alice's graduation, and he didn't fail to keep his promise. The graduation and subsequent celebrations felt drab and lackluster to Jimmy, and he even remarked on it during a conversation with Alice. The latter added that they were aware of Tia's absence. Jimmy would have liked his father to stay for his granddaughter's graduation ceremony, but Randy was adamant that Jimmy was too emotional about the whole affair and that it was unnecessary. Jimmy was further hurt when Alice instantly accepted that her grandfather was missing.
On the other hand, it's just a matter of time before Alice leaves for college. It was previously suggested on 'Shrinking' that Alice would be studying at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. She had previously planned to spend the summer with her father, but alas, the plan seems destined to be canceled since the university's Soccer practice begins in June. If this wasn't enough, Jimmy has been aware all this while that Harrison Ford's character, Paul, will be relocating to Connecticut as well. Jimmy learned this second-hand from Lily Rabe's Meg. He was heartbroken to learn that Paul had agreed to hand over his practice to Gaby for a dollar, with the money to be transferred to him only via Venmo. Jimmy was particularly hurt because he felt entitled to Paul's confidence and believed he deserved to know about Paul's decision to move away directly from him.
Most of Jimmy's past trauma can be attributed to the persistent father issues he has harbored all these years. In a way, Paul served as a surrogate father for Jimmy several times. As the tenth episode of the Apple TV+ show neared its conclusion, Paul and Jimmy found themselves in a heated exchange in which Jimmy expressed his frustration. Paul ultimately advised him to renew the conversation when he felt a bit more level-headed. One can't exactly avoid the notion that Jimmy is now headed to be lonelier than he ever was.
