‘FBI’ star makes surprise cameo in spinoff show ‘CIA’ and we hope he stays
When the two 'FBI' spinoff shows, 'FBI: International' and 'FBI: Most Wanted,' were previously canceled, fans of the procedural shows were naturally disheartened. To make up for this, CBS has now come out with another spinoff show titled 'CIA,' starring Nick Gehlfuss as Special Agent Bill Goodman and Tom Ellis as Colin Glass. The latest addition to the famed 'FBI' franchise premiered its debut episode on Monday, February 23 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Apart from fueling expectations with what appears to be a promising debut season, the 'CIA' premiere episode also featured a surprise appearance from 'FBI' star Jeremy Sisto, who portrays the FBI's Assistant Special Agent in Charge, Jubal Valentine.
'CIA' is poised to play on all the endearing elements of a buddy-cop thriller, with the two leading characters initially starting on the wrong foot, and eventually recognizing each other's abilities, albeit begrudingly. Goodman and Glass are two characters who lie on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to their professional mindsets. While Goodman is a military veteran and an agent who does everything by the book, his partner, Glass, is known for his impulsive, risky decisions.
The official description of the show reads, "When by-the-book FBI Special Agent Bill Goodman is loaned out to a clandestine CIA/FBI task force, he finds himself teamed up with secretive and roguish CIA case officer Colin Glass. Together, they will work on covert operations in New York, uncovering international plots, terrorist cells, and geopolitical secrets. On CIA, Bill will learn the rules of this murky world on the fly as Colin leads him deeper into spy games where only one thing is clear — their work keeps America safe, even if no one will ever know what they did in the shadows."
The premiere episode was titled 'Directed Energy', and chronicled the fallout of a top-secret weapon being stolen in broad daylight from a U.S. Defence contractor. Goodman is soon tasked with solving the mystery and paired with the rogue, secretive CIA agent Glass. The official description further reads, "Their new partnership gets off to a rocky start, but they soon realize their opposing viewpoints may be their greatest asset." Ken Girotti directed the episode, which was written by Mike Weiss. The show is produced by Wolf Entertainment.
Sisto's addition to the show adds a degree of credibility and ties it with the rest of the 'FBI' franchise. In an interview with The Decider, Gehlfuss had spoken up about the importance of having the character of Valentine, "As Bill’s superior, Jubal loans him out to the to the CIA in a way that makes Bill very apprehensive. Bill Goodman initially thinks this mission is a one-off thing, and by the end, he realizes that it could be a career maker for him."
Gehlfuss then went on to add the exemplary working relationship he shares with Sisto, "Jeremy and I work very similarly. We’ll chat before a take in character and just get into the moment. He’s a real actor’s actor in that sense. Obviously, he’s such a pro and has been very welcoming to everyone joining the FBI family. When you are employed by Wolf Entertainment, you enter into a community of artists who are so good at their jobs. Jeremy and I are becoming friends now, and it’s really great. I love that the relationship between our characters will continue throughout this season." 'CIA' airs new episodes on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
