‘Shrinking’ Season 3 finale recap: Jimmy’s big day doesn’t go as planned while Gaby takes a leap of faith
Season 3 of ‘Shrinking’ has been steadily piling life changes onto Jimmy, and by Episode 11, titled ‘And That’s Our Time’, everything hits him at once. He’s trying to figure out dating again after years of grief, his daughter is about to leave for college, and amid it all, he’s still dealing with old wounds tied to his father. Here’s how everything played out in the finale:
Gaby’s unexpected morning turns into a major decision
Gaby’s (Jessica Williams) storyline kicks off in the most unexpected way possible. She’s just looking for painkillers at Derrick’s (Damon Wayans Jr.) place and suddenly finds an engagement ring. Curiosity gets the better of her. She tries it on, but it gets stuck. What follows is a bit of a scramble. She leaves in a hurry, throws together some excuses, and calls an emergency meeting with her inner circle. Even Paul (Harrison Ford) joins via a video call from Connecticut. Her dilemma isn’t really about the ring itself. It’s about timing, as she and Derrick had agreed to slow things down.
As the conversation unfolds, her friends gently point out something she’s been avoiding. Every step forward in her relationship with Derrick has come a little earlier than she planned, yet nothing has gone wrong. If anything, she’s been happy. By the end of it, Gaby has her answer. Instead of waiting for Derrick to pop the question, she flips the script and sets up a surprise proposal party herself. Ultimately, the two get engaged.
Jimmy’s ‘perfect day’ falls apart
Jimmy (Jason Segel), meanwhile, is on a mission. He wants to give Alice (Lukita Maxwell) the perfect send-off before she leaves for college. However, right from the start, Alice is in a bad mood, and it has nothing to do with him. She’s dealing with a petty argument with her best friend, Summer. Jimmy, being Jimmy, can’t resist getting involved. He arranges a surprise lunch to force them to talk it out. Surprisingly, it works. The two girls realize their fight is less about whatever they argued over and more about the fear of drifting apart once they’re in different cities. They decide to make an effort to stay close, and Summer even offers to drive Alice to college. While this is a sweet gesture, it completely ruins Jimmy’s carefully rehearsed goodbye speech.
Sofi and Jimmy: A second chance?
Jimmy’s love life has been messy, to say the least. His relationship with Sofi (Cobie Smulders) finally got going this season after a lot of back-and-forth. However, one awkward encounter with his father derailed everything. Randy’s comments, especially comparing Sofi to Jimmy’s late wife, Tia, hit a nerve. Jimmy panicked and ended things, later realizing he wasn’t ready to move forward because it felt like letting go of the past. That’s when Paul steps in, despite their recent tensions.
He invites Jimmy to breakfast under the pretense of redoing their missed goodbye. When Jimmy arrives, Sofi is already there. Paul points out that Jimmy has a habit of imagining how things should go, then shutting down when reality doesn’t match that version. He also makes it clear that moving forward doesn’t erase what came before. In the end, the duo decides to give their relationship another chance and see where it goes.
Paul and Jimmy finally clear the air
The tension between Paul and Jimmy has been building for a while. After Randy (Jeff Daniels) skips Alice’s graduation, he casually tells Jimmy that not everyone is as sensitive as he is, which clearly bothers him. Later, at the party, Jimmy hears Paul make a similar joke to Alice, prompting him to start seeing both men in the same light. That leads to distance, and Jimmy skipping their farewell only makes things worse. But Paul isn’t one to leave things unfinished. He flies back, meets Jimmy again, and this time, they actually talk. Paul admits he’s been unfair, that Jimmy means more to him than he’s shown. Jimmy, in turn, owns up to letting his issues with his father bleed into this relationship.
