'Shrinking' showrunner gives major update on show's future ahead of Season 3 finale
Shrinking season 3 will bow out on Wednesday, and with that, the three-season story that was pitched by creator Bill Lawrence will also end. Lawrence recently came on X to celebrate the ending, and further added that he is "Excited to start a completely new story next year. Feels scary/risky/fun." This could mean that the next season may not continue the tale of Jimmy and Paul, that viewers have fallen in love with. The show kick-started with the death of Jimmy's wife, Tia. Since then, viewers have seen Jimmy (Jason Segel) battle his own demons using unprecedented methods of therapy. This always put him at a crossroads with Paul (Harrison Ford), who is more traditional in his approach. The next season will move on from these state of affairs, but will reportedly continue with the same cast.
Lawrence believes that if the show continues, it should do so with a different storyline, according to Deadline. "The same way that Shrinking, if the fourth season started and Jason Segel woke up and went, ‘you know I’ve been thinking about it, and I was still super sad about my wife,’ everybody would be like, What are you doing? We saw that already," he explained. "But as a writer, he told 36 stories with these actors and actresses. We have a new story to tell, and that’ll either be, two- or three-season story or it won’t. I never find that stuff daunting." The showrunner shares his plans for the new season on X.

- this week is the Season finale, not last week
- there is a Season 4 with the EXACT same cast (that's why we are doing it, we love each other)
- we are ending the 3 Season story we pitched so have to tell a new one S4
Since the cast will be the same, there is a possibility that this 'new story' just reboots everything. In this reiteration, Tia may be alive. This would remove the central conflict of the last three seasons and allow viewers to see where the main characters stand without that tragedy. Another way the story can move forward is for all the characters to be in the next chapter of their lives. For this to happen, all of them need to move on from their present ordeals. This is a possibility for most characters in the story at present. Paul is moving away from California in order to be with his family in Connecticut, Alice is set to join Wesleyan University after graduation, Brian is planning to stay in New Mexico for three months with his husband, Gaby is planning to transform the therapy center into a trauma center, and Liz and Derek are excited to take on the new role of grandparents. There is a sense of closure for each of these characters.
Only Jimmy seems stuck in a limbo after his recent breakup with Sofi and his experiences with his father. His last meeting with his mentor, Paul, ends in a conflict as well. The upcoming finale will seemingly resolve this conflict. Season 4 may showcase how these characters move forward after their 'happy ending.' They may face a new challenge that will become the focus of the upcoming seasons. The show may be divided into East Coast and West Coast. The West Coast will focus on Jimmy and co. while the East Coast will shed light on Paul, his daughter Meg, and Alice. Apart from Ford and Segal, the series also stars Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley, who are all expected to return in season 4.
