Contains spoilers for 'We Were the Lucky Ones' episode 3
LVOV, POLAND: Hulu's latest historical drama series, 'We Were the Lucky Ones', debuted on Thursday, March 28, with the release of its first three episodes.
Adapted from Georgia Hunter's book, inspired by her own family's true story, the show follows the journey of a Polish Jewish family during the 1940s.
Starring Joey King, Logan Lerman, Hadas Yaron, Michael Aloni, and Sam Woolf, the series delves into the harrowing experiences of the Kurc family as they are torn apart and forced to flee from the Nazis. Amid persecution, they scatter across the world in a bid to survive.
Episode 2 concludes with soldiers forcibly removing Genec Kurc (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) from his home and interrogating him about his identity. Genec's false information on his housing application has led to him being labeled an enemy and subsequently arrested.
What happens to the couple after that? Stick around to find out.
Herta voluntarily gets arrested with Genec Kurc
Genec is arrested by the soldiers because he fails to disclose his Jewish or Polish identity on his rental agreement.
After Genec's arrest, his wife Herta (Moran Rosenblatt) boldly proclaims, "If he is an enemy, I am an enemy." This declaration leads to her arrest by the soldiers. She takes this action because other soldiers are vandalizing their apartment, and she feels safer being with Genec.
The story moves to Genec and Herta on a train, cramped with other prisoners in a crowded carriage. They endure days of darkness, with no sunlight reaching them during the journey.
Three weeks later, we find everyone on board struggling due to a shortage of resources.
Genec Kurc and pregnant Herta face real challenges after reaching their destination
Genec, Herta, and the other arrested individuals reach their destination, a prisoner camp in Siberia where they are assigned to work in the fields. In exchange, they receive shelter and three meals a day.
The leader emphasizes that they must work to eat, warning that those who refuse will go hungry. He also declares this location as their new home and warns against any attempts to escape.
Genec requests a meeting with the Commandant and is escorted to him. Despite his plea for some rest for his sick wife, the Commandant denies the request. Even his plea to see the doctor is met with refusal. Meanwhile, Herta realizes she's pregnant.
Genec returns to work, where he is told he is late and must report to headquarters to deal with his punishment. The Commandant tells him he will have his food withheld for a week. Genec snaps at him, stating how unfair this is for everyone there. They beat him down and send him back to his quarters.
Towards the end of the episode, he returns to Herta and is introduced to his newborn baby. He holds her and comforts his wife.
Will Genec and Herta make it out alive from the prisoner camp or will they meet their fate in there? Stay tuned to MEAWW for more updates regarding upcoming episodes.
