'Vikings: Valhalla': A look at where each character was at the end of Season 2
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The Viking warriors of 'Vikings: Valhalla' are about to roar one last time as Netflix prepares to roll out the third and final season of the historical drama series on Thursday, July 11, 2024.
The show, a sequel to the smash hit series 'Vikings', premiered its first season on February 25, 2022, and centers on Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), Freydis Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), and Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter).
Season 2 ended with the three characters, Freydis, Leif, and Harald, looking forward to their upcoming adventures, setting the stage for the events that would occur in the final chapter.
What happened with Leif Eriksson and Harald Sigurdsson in 'Vikings: Valhalla' Season 2?
Harald and Leif found a glimmer of hope when Lord Vitomir (Steven Brand) hired them to take him, his daughter Elena (Sofya Lebedeva), and some mysterious precious cargo to Constantinople, where Harald intended to raise funds for an army after failing to secure funds from Yaroslav the Wise (Marcin Dorocinski).
Along the voyage, Leif develops feelings for the intelligent woman Mariam (Hayat Kamille), who is returning to Constantinople but sadly she has a fatal illness.
Before she passes away, she offers Leif the key to her house.
The Emperor (Nikolai Kinski), arrives to meet the crew when they eventually reach Constantinople.
It is then revealed that Elena is the priceless cargo and that the emperor is engaged to her.
Although Harald has fallen in love with her, he is upset since he can no longer be with her. The season ends with both Leif and Harald arriving at Constantinople.
Did Freydís Eriksdotter succeed in defeating Jarl Olaf Haraldsson in 'Vikings: Valhalla' Season 2?
With the intention of founding a new Uppsala, leaders Lord Harekr (Bradley James) and Gudrid (Yngvild Støen Grotmol) named Freydís high priestess upon her arrival at Jomsborg.
She finds out, however, that Jomsborg is far from a perfect place to live, with certain inhabitants treated like second-class citizens and refugees being forced to work as slaves.
She disagrees with Harekr because she insists that all worshippers should be treated equally.
Following the birth of her son Harald, Freydís tries to flee Jomsborg with Jorundr's (Stanislav Callas) assistance but is captured by Harker.
Eventually, she manages to get away, fights Harekr, and kills him with the help of the downtrodden locals, turning Jomsborg into an egalitarian community.
Freydís once again affirms her duty as the 'Keeper of the Faith' when she fights Jarl Olaf Haraldsson (Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson) when he comes to murder her and take her son.
The season ends with Freydis and Queen Aelfgifu (Pollyanna McIntosh) declaring peace when she goes back to Kattegat and negotiates a 'mother-to-mother' ceasefire with the armies of Norway.
Did Jarl Olaf Haraldsson survive in 'Vikings: Valhalla' Season 2?
Following the devastation of Kattegat, King Sweyn Forkbeard (Søren Pilmark) appoints Olaf to defend his grandson, Charlie O'Connor (Svein Knutsson), Norway's new monarch.
Olaf sets a reward for Freydis and Harald, and after failing to apprehend Harald, he pursues Freydis in Jomsborg.
Olaf's company is slaughtered as he underestimates Freydis, and Freydis eventually murders him in front of Svein, bringing the story of the great Viking king to an end.
Did Earl Godwin succeed in his cunning scheme in 'Vikings: Valhalla' Season 2?
Earl Godwin (David Oakes) foiled an assassination attempt on Queen Emma (Laura Berlin) and discovers that the intended poisoner was his fiancée, Aelfwynn's (Maria Guiver) brother.
Despite Aelfwynn's claims of ignorance, Emma tortured her for information, culminating in Aelfwynn's death but not before she shed light on Godwin's ambition for his future son to be king.
Following King Canute's (Bradley Freegard) return, Godwin strengthened his status by marrying Canute's niece, Gytha (Henessi Schmidt), as part of a premeditated plan to join the royal line.
Turns out, Godwin had used his connections to plan the murder attempt, knowing Emma's retaliation would indirectly lead to his royal marriage, allowing him to achieve his goals.The Season 2 ends with Goldwin marrying Gytha and securing a position in the royal family.
What happened with Queen Emma in 'Vikings: Valhalla' Season 2?
Queen Emma's suspicions about Godwin grow stronger after learning of Aelfwynn's connection to the assassin and her statement about Godwin's goals.
Emma continued her investigation by visiting Godwin's favorite bars and learning about his relationship with the Bear from a local lady.
Emma and her guards discovered the Bear dead with a ring around his neck, certain that Godwin was to blame.
Emma stole the ring and gave it to Gytha upon her wedding, telling her to wear it as a reminder to Godwin of his past and her understanding of his plans, implying that she, too, could play his game.
