After a two-week hiatus, the popular crime procedural is coming back and with every passing episode, the stakes go higher and the plot keeps thickening. Taking cues from the last episode, “The Ninth Girl”, we see that Chief Tommy/Abigail Thomas (Edie Falco) has a lot going on lately, in her life.

An episode earlier, it was the sudden move on her love life that piqued our intrigue. We saw her going on a date with Kiley, a sports agent, who was introduced to by her ex-husband. They went on a date and even shared a kiss. It was unexpected, knowing how tough Tommy had become, making us wonder where this is going to go. Considering Tommy has a troubled family, high-pressure and constantly challenging work environment, will she consider taking the next step with Kiley. But we didn’t get a chance to see anything beyond that one date.

Next, while investigating the kidnapping of a Chinese American baby, Tommy busted a prostitution center and that was when she found out that her own son-in-law, Henry, was a “john”, a client of one the sex workers. She has still not faced her daughter with this news and it appears that when she does, it is only going to make matters worse. We already know how strained Tommy and Kate’s relationship is.

And if that wasn’t enough for Kate, her and Henry’s marriage was also on the rocks, which the couple finally managed to hold on to. And now if this news comes out, Kate will neither forgive Henry nor be able to deal with Tommy. Although both the mother and the daughter are trying really hard to mend the cracks and even out the creases, one day at a time, it’s not easy, considering how Tommy has been more focused on her career, work and other professional challenges.

On the work front, the upcoming episode will see Tommy in a very delicate situation. As the official synopsis says, “Racial tension rises between the LAPD and the African American community, following the murder of a notable community activist.”

This means a lot for the city police to handle; most importantly, this will be a difficult and very challenging road to tread on for Tommy. Knowing her, she would be rational enough to approach the solution but her friends in the city hall and other powerful positions could pose a problem.

We are yet to see if and how Tommy rises above these struggles in her personal and professional lives.

‘Tommy’ Episode 7 will air on April 2 at 10 pm/9c on CBS.
