It was Date Night on 'The Masked Singer' and the evening didn't disappoint as there was a string of mesmerizing performances. The five singers of the night were Cupcake, Mallard, Banana Split, Queen of Hearts and a wild card entry — Caterpillar. It was all fun and games until the unmasking, which is undoubtedly the most exciting and also the hardest part of the show. That said, the singer who had to bow out after the episode was Cupcake.

For those who felt Cupcake was Ruth Pointer, the guess proved to be spot on as the unmasking revealed the veteran soul singer who was supposed to perform with her sister, Anita Pointer. Cupcake's attire was quite an eye-catching one with shades of pink, purple and blue along with some bling toppings. With the unmasking, Cupcake joins the list of other contestants who have exited the show — Octopus (Dwight Howard), Mother Nature (Vivica A. Fox), Pufferfish (Toni Braxton), and Baby (Larry the Cable Guy).

The panel guesses included Jackée Harry, Grace Jones, Tina Turner, Tina Knowles, Angela Bassett, Roberta Flack, Ruth Pointer, RuPaul, and Leslie Jones.

Reactions on social media poured in fast as fans were excited to see Pointer. "@MaskedSingerFOX Damnn #CupcakeMask was Ruth Pointer so congrats cupcake was really fun to watch and did great didn’t expect her going home tonight but happy to see her and be right lol congrats," read one of the tweets. "#TheMaskedSinger YAAS! I was RIGHT!!! I'm So Excited & I just can't hide it, I knew it was Ruth Pointer & I think I like it!!!!!! I am a HUGE fan of the Pointer Sisters! I'm so sorry Anita isn't feeling well & but my thoughts & prayers go to her! Get well Anita!!" another tweet read.

Nicole Scherzinger, one of the judges along guessed it right and the audience was spellbound. "What?! Did ANYONE on Twitter guess Ruth Pointer before Nicole said it? I was convinced it was either Billy Porter or RuPaul!" a fan remarked. "I first honestly thought the Cupcake was Mary Wilson but thankfully I switched to Ruth Pointer #TheMaskedSinger and got it right Yeah! Proud of her and myself for getting it right!" a comment read.

Clues that pointed to Ruth Pointer

Soon after Cupcake performed to 'Finesse' by Bruno Mars, the vocals had Nicole guess that it could be Ruth Pointer. That she chose whole foods as the most-used app on her phone just helped in forming the conclusion. Prior to that, the first clue was a compass pointing north. She also admitted that she hadn't gone solo in a long time. The three-time Grammy joined her sisters, Anita, Bonnie, and June as the quartet contended won ten Grammys.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Pointer, 75, spoke about Nicole's guess not coming as a surprise. "You know I wasn't that surprised," she explained. "Because I think it came from her knowledge of the sort of recognizing that I was a professional because she's a professional. And she comes from a girl group, and I come from one. I think she just kind of put those things together. And a lot of people have told me anyways that I have a pretty recognizable voice speaking and laughing, and sometimes singing in the low register that I have. So I think I wasn't that surprised when she guessed it."
