Horror movies have a different essence, be it 'The Exorcism' or something more recent like the 'Annabelle' franchise. Speaking of horror, 'The Conjuring 4' is in development as per THR. As the screenwriter, David Leslie Johnson McGoldrick will return to 'The Conjuring' universe. McGoldrick is not new to the franchise as the writer-producer had previously scripted installments including The 'Conjuring 2' (2016) and 'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It' (2021).

Not many details have been revealed by the creators till now except for the news of a new movie is in development. Although we are guessing James Wan and Peter Safran will be back to produce, having served as producers on all past films in the franchise. The films present a dramatization of the real-life cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators, and authors associated with prominent yet controversial cases of haunting. The main series follows their attempts to assist people who find themselves possessed by demonic spirits, while the spin-off films focus on the origins of some of the entities the Warrens have encountered.

Apparently, the franchise has been commercially successful, having grossed a combined $2.1 billion against a combined budget of $178 million, becoming the highest-grossing horror franchise to date. The franchise has predominantly received positive to mixed reviews. The first movie of the franchise, titled 'The Conjuring' grossed over $319 million worldwide against its $20 million budget. Crazy, isn't it?

The previous movie of the franchise, 'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It' (2021) was helmed by Michael Chaves and not by James Wan, as Wan directed the previous two movies of the franchise. Although we cannot confirm who will helm the upcoming movie of the franchise. It is safe to assume Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, who star as Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators in the franchise will be back as the films present the real-life cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, perhaps with a touch of drama added to it.

However, the success of 'The Conjuring' has spawned several related films and sequels. Along with the original film, there is 2016's 'The Conjuring 2' and 'The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,' which was released in 2021, as we mentioned earlier. Apart from those, three films about the 'Annabelle' doll have been made: 2014's 'Annabelle,' its prequel 'Annabelle: Creation' from 2017, and a sequel to both films 'Annabelle Comes Home' from 2019. Two other films featuring supernatural threats are first seen in 'The Conjuring' films which include 'The Nun', released in 2018, and 'The Crooked Man', which is in development along with the fourth part of 'The Conjuring'.

Speaking of 'The Conjuring,' Johnson-McGoldrick came to 'The Conjuring' Universe after writing the films Orphan,' 'Red Riding Hood' and 'Wrath of the Titans' for Warner Bros. The screenwriter is otherwise known for his work on the studio’s DC superhero film 'Aquaman' and its sequel, 'Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom,' which is slated for release on December 25, 2023.
