After years of waiting for the ‘Kings of K-pop’, fans are finally getting a comeback. BIGBANG was one of the biggest K-pop groups in the early 2010s, however, once their military enlistment era started, they went on a hiatus. Their last full comeback was six years ago in 2016 and their goodbye single ‘Flower Road’ was in 2018. We were supposed to get a reunion at Coachella 2020 but after it got postponed, they are not part of the lineup anymore in the 2022 edition. However, with good reason.

The internet was in an uproar when BIGBANG finally announced their reunion on February 7. However, it came with bitter news. YG Entertainment announced that their boy group would be coming back with a new single this spring. They had recorded the song and were preparing to film its music video. At the same time, they shared that member T.O.P would be leaving the label after his contract ended soon and this would be his last comeback with BIGBANG as a YG artist.

T.O.P to leave YG

While fans anxiously waited for BIGBANG to make a comeback, T.O.P was one of the members who often assured fans that the group was still together and would give hints of a reunion over the past few years. With the way YG framed their statement, fans have held on to the hope that T.O.P is still part of the group and is simply leaving the label. YG explained that he would participate in group activities whenever he could. However, a past live video has resurfaced that foretold his departure from YG and probably the group.

In February 2020, a few months before BIGBANG’s canceled reunion at Coachella, T.O.P had gone live and shared he wanted to show his true self which he couldn’t in the past. The K-pop idol added, “I won’t do a comeback in Korea. I don’t want to make a comeback at all. If I do, more articles will be made but they won’t let me say anything.” He had also said that he was making his own music and wanted to establish a solo career. This came after the general public dropped him even after he was cleared of his drug scandal.

'It was 2 years ago'

While some think that this means he will also leave BIGBANG, fans just want him to do what he wants, “He didn’t lie! I think he is going to do it on his own terms! I applaud him!!” It could also mean that he will simply not be participating in the usual promotional activities that follow a K-pop comeback, “Hey no pressure on him please i will be so glad to have an ot4 comeback.”

Another explained, “It was 2 years ago, he was probably just going through a lot of things. You can't tell me that people dont break down about their careers/lives at least once in their lifetime Leave then alone. They're finally coming back. So let them have a successful comeback.” One fan wondered about the promotional activities, "I don’t think they will… Remember what T.O.P said in his last live.. Prolly 2 performances or what idk. Anyway, I really don’t mind. I’ll take whatever I can get. I’m just happy to hear new music from them."
